Profile of the Programme
The purpose of the Joint Master’s Programme is to prepare students with appropriate academic knowledge and professional skills to work in multiple fields of application of Intercultural Education and Mediation (such as [intercultural] educational units, organisations, immigration policy bodies, non-governmental organisations, state and local government), with the ultimate goal of social cohesion and inclusion. The programme promotes respect for pluralism and diversity, intercultural awareness and competence, intercultural communication, dialogue and mediation, collaborative intercultural learning, and differentiated teaching/design skills by:
- attending relevant courses; and
- studying relevant literature (in Greek and other languages).
In addition, the programme aims to cultivate research skills through:
- attending special quantitative/qualitative research courses;
- undertaking small-scale research as part of the various courses and/or preparing a Master’s Thesis; and
- participating in the students’ Practicum.
In order to obtain the Master’s Degree, the successful completion of 120 ECTS is mandatory, i.e. the completion of 9 semester courses (90 ECTS ) or the completion of 6 semester courses (60 ECTS ) and a Master’s Thesis (30 ECTS ), as well as the successful completion of the Practicum (30 ECTS ).
Career Prospects
The content and the Practicum of the Joint Master’s Programme contribute to forming scientist-researchers (action) and mediators, who exhibit a reflective disposition and the ability to produce new intercultural knowledge in shaping an inclusive society.
Graduates of the programme have employment prospects:
- As teachers in the formal education system receiving specialised knowledge in Intercultural Education, differentiated teaching and school mediation. In particular, the graduates receive the scoring provided by ASEP in the permanent and substitute appointment tables, but also for the executive reviews.
- As Intercultural Mediators in organisations that deal with issues related to the inclusion of vulnerable or special social groups (immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, groups with diverse cultural perceptions and practices, single-parent families, etc.). The PMD cultivates skills that are directly related to the professional profile of the EOPPEP Intercultural Mediator.
- As knowledge professionals and education executives in the wider field of application of Intercultural Education and Mediation at both local and international levels.
Access to Further Studies
Graduates of the programme can be admitted to Third Cycle studies (Doctoral Studies).
Admission Criteria
The minimum requirement for admission to the postgraduate study programme is the possession of a degree (Bachelor ‘s Degree) from a recognised university.
In addition, prospective students must meet the following admission criteria:
- Application for Admission: All fields must be completed, including field 9 with the details of two recommendations.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV).
- Certified Copy of the Bachelor’s Degree from accredited universities. The title must include the graduation date and final-degree grade.
- Certified Copy of the Transcript: The Transcript must be the final one, which includes the graduation date and final-degree grade.
- DOATAP recognition, for prospective students from Greece, in case the undergraduate degree was not awarded by Higher Educational Institutions (A.E.I.) or by Higher Technological Educational Institutions (A.TE.I.) of Greece.
- Copy of the Identity card.
- Statement of Personal Objectives and Research Interests (approx. 2 pages): A letter stating the candidate’s individual skills and potential, his/her biographical note, as well as his/her expectations from the programme and how the programme will help his/her personal development and career development.
- Previous teaching experience and other evidence such as articles, monographs, awards, academic distinctions, etc. are an advantage.
Course assessment usually comprises of a comprehensive final exam and continuous assessment. Continuous assessment can include amongst others, mid-terms, projects
Letter grades are calculated based on the weight of the final exam and the continuous assessment and the actual numerical marks obtained in these two assessment components. Based on the course grades the student’s semester grade point average (GPA) and cumulative point average (CPA) are calculated.
The student must complete 120 ECTS and all programme requirements.
A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 5.0 is required.
Upon successful completion of this program, the students should be able to:
- To become more aware of fundamental concepts, principles and models of Intercultural Education and Mediation.
- To delve into the content and reasoning of modern trends, theories and research related to Intercultural Education and Mediation.
- To be fully informed about the scope and content of educational needs of the learners (students, beneficiaries of lifelong learning programmes) as well as the interdisciplinary character of the subject.
- To understand the philosophy, necessity and implementation strategies of intercultural inclusive education and mediation in educational or other organisations and analyse the potential difficulties of their implementation nowadays.
- To acquire the necessary scientific background and skills for the design and conduct of small-scale research in the field of Intercultural Education and Mediation.
- To be able to study and critically analyse research in Intercultural Education and Mediation, in order to be fully informed about the progress of research in their field, the range of present data and their prospective extension to (school) practice as well as to highlight any shortcomings or limitations.
- To know and become familiar with a series of tools of assessing intercultural competence.
- To be aware of the fact that Intercultural Education and Mediation is primarily a product of co-responsibility and planed cooperation between stakeholders (school, parents, mediators, organisation executives, local/wider community).
- To understand that the action of involved sciences in Intercultural Education and Mediation is related to crucial areas such as (differentiated) instruction, psychological support, consulting, ensuring appropriate conditions of infrastructure, provision of suitably adapted visual aids, use of technology and interactive techniques as (alternative) teaching material, etc.
- To be informed on existing educational programmes and software and to be able to conduct and implement appropriate differentiated strategies of teaching and mediation.
- To acquire fluency and relevant skills regarding the collection and classification of contemporary references resorting to the study and utilisation of appropriate scientific sources and the use of the Internet.
- To develop skills of research writing and documentation, designed and carried out by themselves, individually or collaboratively, with the contribution and supervision of their instructors and to be encouraged to participate with presentations in scientific conferences and symposiums or and pursue their publication in scientific journals.
- To operate in the contemporary school, organisations and the wider society as educational officers/reference executives and carriers of change assuming an active role, but also a role of advisor-guide of their fellow students towards the consolidation of the interculturally differentiated approach and mediation for the creation of inclusive communities of learning.
- To creatively apply the strategy of intercultural, transformative and inclusive education in their organisations.
