This section is a resource for employees and students of the University of Nicosia regarding Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S).

Aims

The EHS Office aims to:

  1. Support and enhance the academic and research objectives of the University by promoting a safe and healthy environment for all employees and students.
  2. Promote Environmental consciousness and energy conservation.
  3. Fully comply with the Republic of Cyprus and EU legislation related with EHS issues.

Policy

It is the policy of the University of Nicosia:

  • To ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all its employees
  • To ensure that the statutory duties of the University of Nicosia are met at all times
  • To maintain clear procedures for the action to be taken in the event of injury, and for the reporting of accidents and hazards
  • To maintain safe systems of work for faculty, staff, students and third parties
  • To maintain clear procedures for action to be taken in case of fire and emergencies
  • To maintain the established procedures for joint consultation between Professional Representatives, Trade Union and Management on health and safety, reviewing them when appropriate
  • To provide appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure the health and safety of faculty, staff and students
  • To maintain and improve the high degree of safety consciousness and responsible attitudes to Environment, Health and Safety throughout the University
  • To cover all the buildings, including hostel accommodation, owned, leased or sub-contracted by the University

EHS Committee and Subcommittees

Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Committee

Roles

The Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Committee of the University of Nicosia plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of the university community. Its functions include:

  • Developing and implementing policies related to environment, health, safety, and well-being, ensuring they comply with local and international regulations.
  • Participating in the preparation of safety rules and the selection of safe working methods.
  • Submitting recommendations to the management for measures to improve health, safety, and well-being, as well as to prevent occupational accidents, hazardous incidents, and occupational diseases.
  • Addressing complaints and other matters concerning the health, safety, and well-being of employees in the workplace.
  • Examining reports or statements prepared by the Environment, Health, and Safety Office or other members of the EHS Committee.
  • Promoting and ensuring the cooperation of all employees in the workplace for the implementation of safety measures and safe methods of work, as well as ways to create and develop safety awareness.
  • Ensuring that employees in the workplace receive the necessary information, training, and guidance on measures to protect their health and safety.
  • Organizing training sessions and awareness campaigns to educate faculty, staff, and students about their responsibilities related to EHS issues and how to respond in case of emergencies.
  • Leading the response and managing the situation in case of accidents, injuries, or other incidents, including conducting investigations to understand what happened and how to prevent a recurrence.
  • Regularly assessing potential risks in the University environment and developing strategies to manage and mitigate these risks.
  • Conducting regular inspections and audits of University facilities to ensure compliance with EHS policies and standards and, if necessary, advising management on any corrective action.
  • Promoting environmentally sustainable practices throughout the university, such as waste management, energy conservation, and the reduction of carbon emissions.
  • Serving as a liaison between the university and external authorities concerning EHS matters, such as local health and safety regulators or environmental agencies.

OHSAS 18001:2007

The University of Nicosia has successfully completed the certifcation process for the Occupational Health and Safety management System and found to be in conformity with the requirements of the Standard “OHSAS 18001:2007”.
