Profile of the Programme

The PhD in Education programme aims to prepare postgraduate students to become researchers, leaders and educators, whose work contributes to the in-depth understanding of the scientific area of Education Sciences, to the production of new knowledge in a conceptual and methodological level, as well as to the advancements of educational research, with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of education. Concurrently, the programme aims at preparing doctoral candidates to act as catalysts of change in their workplace, by providing them with solid research foundations and professional skills, which are necessary in the changing field of education.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the program pursued professional careers across the educational sector, and in research. In the educational sector, graduates work as university lecturers, teachers at different levels of education, school principals, educational administrators, and curriculum and instructional design specialists. They also contribute to the development and implementation of digital and distance learning environments and educational technologies. In the field of research, graduates work as directors of research and educational organizations, and educational researchers conducting and leading research projects aimed at advancing educational theory, practice, and innovation.

Access to Further Studies

Upon graduation, students would have obtained the highest academic title possible.

For the student to be admitted in the program, the candidate is required to submit the following documents:

  1. Research proposal based on a topic included in the Call for PhD applications (up to 5000 words).
  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  3. Short report of personal goals and research interests.
  4. Bachelor’s degree with a minimum grade of at least “Very good” or equivalent from a different grading system
  5. Master’s degree.
  6. Grade transcripts for bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
  7. Two recent recommendation letters, preferably from professors in Higher Education who know the applicant well.
  8. Evidence of prior research involvement (e.g. Master’s or BA Thesis, completion of research projects, Research Methods grades of B+ or 8.7/10 and higher)
  9. Certificate of English language proficiency. The criterion of good English language proficiency is at least one of the following:
  • Completion of the degree in an institution whose language of instruction was English.
  • TOEFL ≥ 550 or
  • GCE O’ Level English Language ≥ C or
  • ΙELTS ≥ 6.5.

The admission process may include an interview during which the candidate delivers a short presentation based on their proposal submitted with their application.

The assessments included in this programme of study include the following:

  • Final course examinations
  • Colloquium (doctoral proposal evaluation and presentation)
  • Dissertation Evaluation
  • Presentation of the dissertation as a public lecture and the oral examination (viva).
  • Presentation at research conferences

The student must complete 180 ECTS and all programme requirements.

A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 2.0 is required. Thus, although a ‘D-‘ is a PASS grade, in order to achieve a CPA of 2.0 an average grade of ‘C’ is required.

On the completion of the Doctoral Programme students are expected to be able:

To design and evaluate educational research

  • To design and implement research in accordance with the quality indicators for educational research, as well as the personal data protection framework
  • To summarise, compose and evaluate research using qualitative, quantitative and mixed methodology
  • To interpret qualitative and quantitative results based on the appropriate statistical indicators
  • To critically evaluate research studies and their methodologies to determine the validity of their conclusions
  • To author or co-author research and literature reviews that can be presented in conferences or submitted to scientific journals

To demonstrate leadership trends and professional initiatives

  • To be knowledgeable of the changes and new trends promoted through educational reforms and legislation in the field of education
  • To develop leadership skills by participating in diverse settings (e.g. schools, universities, local communities, professional associations, local and international scientific communities) for supporting research and practice based on the latest research findings.

 To teach/present in academic or/and school settings

  • To apply their knowledge and skills to their practice.
  • To collaborate with academic staff in preparation and submission of proposals to educational and scientific conferences and seminars.
  • To prepare educators who can identify and apply evidence-based practices for all students, including those from diverse linguistic, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
