UNIC Virtual Open Weeks: Next Round Kicks Off

Get to Know the University of Nicosia through a diverse schedule of Webinars and Presentations between 22 June and 6 July

The University of Nicosia will begin rolling out its second round of dynamic events over the coming weeks, between 22 June and 6 July 2020. You will have the chance to attend almost 40 specialised webinars, virtual open days and presentations, live or recorded, delivered by the University’s faculty and staff. Returning, transfer and prospective students should especially take advantage of this unique opportunity to talk to academic counsellors, take the ARISTON TEST online, and find out everything they need to know in order to start their studies at the University of Nicosia this Fall.

The schedule of activities includes:

Virtual UNIC Open Days: 1 July, 18:00-19:00 (in Greek). Plus, a series of Virtual International Open Days on 30 June, 18:00-19:00; 2 July, 14:00-15:00; and 6 July, 18:00-19:00 (in English). You will have the opportunity to learn more about the largest University in Cyprus and acquaint yourself with our programmes of study and the strong advantages that we offer:

 

Virtual Medical School Open Day: 24 June (17:00 – 19:30). Take your first step to becoming a doctor now! Learn about the 6-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) Degree designed for High School graduates, and the 4-year St George’s, University of London MBBS programme for university graduates. Discuss questions with Course Directors, current students and our Admissions team live.

Plus, three dedicated Online Info Sessions: 30 June, 18:00-19:00, for the MSc in Health Services Administration; 1 July, 18:00-19:00, for the Master of Public Health (MPH); and 2 July, 18:00-19:00, for the MSc in Family Medicine.

Department of Architecture 2020 Virtual End of Year Exhibition: 26 June, 20:00-21:30. In this online info session, the Department of Architecture will officially launch its first ever Virtual End of Year Exhibition. The Department has responded to the current situation by setting up a virtual exhibition space to host the 2019-2020 work. Participants will be introduced to the vibrant events, activities and creative output of the department and the strengths of its programmes. Following the official launch of the exhibition, participants will be invited to embark on a virtual journey by accessing an online duplicate of the Architecture Research Centre (ARC) and navigating the 2020 Virtual End of Year Exhibition.

Webinars, Presentations and Projects by UNIC Faculty, Staff and Students: Take full advantage of this opportunity to get to know the University’s dedicated faculty, gain insight into your preferred programme of study, and ask any questions you may have. Webinars and presentations include:

  • Connect with the Life and Health Sciences: 22 June, 18:00-19:00; 23 June, 16:00-17:00; 24 June, 18:00-19:00 (in English), 25 June, 18:00-19:00; 29 June, 16:00-17:00 (in English), 30 June, 18:00-19:00. The popular series of workshops («Αγγίζω την Υγεία») returns online with a new round of comprehensive info sessions and workshops. The series, aimed at high school and lyceum students, as well as soldiers and parents more generally, has become an institution in Cyprus and Greece, aiming to encourage young people to get to know the Life and Health Sciences and especially the practical side of each related discipline, through laboratory exercises and interactive experiments. The Department of Life and Health Sciences covers a wide range of related disciplines, which will be effectively demonstrated through the upcoming workshops.
  • Virtual Yoga Class: 19 June, 16:00-17:00. Are you interested in learning more about yoga? Yoga can help you add strength, flexibility, balance, and physical activity to your life and boost your physical and mental wellbeing, benefitting people of all ages and fitness levels. The Virtual Yoga Class is being offered in collaboration with the High Commission of India, Nicosia, with the yoga session being led by Mr. Gaurav Vohra, “Yoga Guru and Teacher of Indian Culture” of the High Commission. 
  • Hospitality and Tourism Alumni Talks: 23 June, 18:00-19:00. Alumni in rewarding positions will share their career path, describing the opportunities and challenges they encountered after the completion of their undergraduate studies in Hospitality and Tourism. They will focus on how their studies equipped them with the essential skills and competencies required to pursue a career in their industry. 
  • Discover the Mental Health Professions: 24 June, 15:30-16:40 (some presentations will be conducted in Greek). This info session will outline the career prospects of individuals interested in pursuing a mental health profession, touching upon key aspects of UNIC’s related Master Programmes, as well as the career paths in different fields. The Department of Social Sciences is considered a pioneer in its field of expertise in Cyprus, currently offering competitive programmes in sought-after areas (Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, School Psychology and Criminology). The Department thus provides an innovative education for future mental health professionals, ensuring they will have a significant and positive impact in people’s lives, empowering individuals, families, groups and communities at large. 
  • CONNECT: Films Made at Home and Tips on How to Create Your Own: 2 July, 16:00-17:00. Institutions and online communities which fund, host and support films as well as discussions specific to the medium of cinema have invited industry professionals and students to make films at home as a way to support and encourage creativity during a period of physical distancing. The session will discuss responses to the call to stay creative and will offer advice on how to create a film while at home. 
  • CONNECT in Digital Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing: 2 July, 12:00-13:00. Marketing Communication practitioners these days are creating, consuming and sharing media in new and innovative ways. This webinar will set you up with the tools to succeed, presenting how practitioners deploy brand management, PR campaign planning, social media marketing and digital advertising in their strategy and providing you with a better understanding on the creative thinking, communication, and strategy skills required for an engaging career in the field. 
  • From Concept to Production: How a Spacecraft is Born: 1 July, 16:00-17:00. Whether to meet immediate needs or simply to satisfy their curiosity, humans have always sought out ways to improve their standards of living and satisfy their innate instinct to explore. Transitioning from these needs, to conceptualizing solutions has evolved over time. Understanding and controlling mechanical system behaviour requires a methodical approach that builds on fundamentals and progresses from understanding statics, kinematics, system dynamics and vibrations, to manufacturing, robotics and control systems – all of which are integral to Mechanical Engineering. 
  • Educating the Future (Natural Gas) Engineers to Lead the Energy Transition: 3 July, 18:00-19:00. The talk will present the merits and drawbacks associated with the main types of electricity generation technologies (natural gas, coal, oil, photovoltaics, wind, hydro and nuclear energy). Major emphasis will be placed on whether a full transition to renewables is possible and at what cost. In closing, the online info session will outline the skills and educational needs the future generation of energy engineers will need to keep the lights on during a smooth energy transition.    
  • New Opportunities for Digital Artists and First Steps in Animation: 29 June, 12:00-13:00. This online info session will outline the opportunities created by the pandemic and social isolation for animators and digital artists working remotely on major animated films and productions, touching upon what it takes to have such a career. The webinar includes a hands-on introduction on one of the first animation techniques. 
  • “Music to your Ears”: A Data Science Student Project: 2 July, 20:00-21:00. Music is a pervasive part of the human experience, irrespective of age, gender, religion or geographic location. Thanks to music streaming services, almost endless playlists of songs are now instantly accessible. In this context, this online session explores what underlying factors (e.g. danceability) drive the popularity of certain songs and genres after performing an extensive data analysis of over 8 Million music streams collected from Spotify. The webinar will elaborate on the findings, while also exploring the Data Science process, which was adopted, in the analysis.
