The University of Nicosia Law Clinic celebrated International Human Rights Day, on the occasion of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on 10 December 1948.

This was marked by a roundtable discussion with a representative of the Commissioner for Administration and Human Rights at the University of Nicosia on Monday, 11 December 2017.

The event honoured the 70th anniversary since the adoption of the UDHR by the United Nations General Assembly, and took place as part of the wider International Human Rights Day celebrations. The roundtable discussion at UNIC took place under the theme #StandUp4HumanRights.

The Commissioner’s representative, Mr Giorgos Kokotas, emphasised the role of the Office of the Commissioner as an Independent Human Rights Authority, accredited by the UN. He cited various related actions of the Commissioner, Ms Maria Stylianou-Lottidis, in areas such as gender discrimination, immigration, and freedom of speech. In his introductory speech, the Head of the Law Clinic, Dr Antonis St. Stylianou, stressed the importance of promoting respect towards and protection of human rights, underscoring that human rights are our collective concern. Dr Stylianou also highlighted the University’s role, through various activities and actions, in contributing to the promotion of universal human rights and fundamental freedoms.
