Call for Applications for the Master (MSc) in Counselling Psychology | Fall 2024 

The University of Nicosia announces the opening of fifteen (15) positions for admission to the Master (MSc) in Counselling Psychology for the Fall 2024 semester of the academic year 2024-2025.

About the Programme:

The programme aims to train students in a variety of theoretical viewpoints from different fields in psychology and teach them the skills to practice effectively with diverse populations. The main goal of this programme is to train students to effectively combine and use the knowledge from theory and research to practice. At the same time, students learn to use theory to design and conduct research and apply this knowledge into practice. Of outmost importance is that the students develop an ethical professional identity that will define their work as practitioners and researchers. 

 Upon successful completion of the programme, students should be able to: 

  • Learn to critically analyse and synthesize information from the different schools of thought in Counselling Psychology using a variety of resources so that their training will provide them with the flexibility to develop as individuals and as practitioners. 
  • Develop knowledge and skills in understanding and evaluating the counselling process in the context of the everyday challenges, and in cultivating appropriate therapeutic relationships depending on the different therapeutic contexts.
  • Develop high ethical standards consistent with their future roles as responsible professionals, and as informed by the ethical codes and standards of the Cyprus Psychologists’ Association, the European Federation for Psychologists’ Association (EFPA), the British Psychological Society (BPS), and the American Psychological Association (APA) Code of Conduct.
  • Respect and effectively work with the wide diversity represented by individuals of differing cultures, gender, ethnicity, races, religions, ages, physical/mental status, and other groups.
  • Adopt a scientific approach to addressing questions relevant to Counselling Psychology and develop proficiency in organizing research protocols and procedures, as well as presenting scientific data in a professional manner.
  • Gain experience with a range of populations and problems through participation in supervised training at different settings.
  • Develop skills in understanding different clinical and psychometric assessment methods as well as being able to apply the findings of the different assessment methods effectively in their clinical practice.
  • Gain knowledge in working with specific population such as couple, families and groups.
  • Develop sensitivity in individual and cultural differences and how they impact on the counselling process.
  • Commit themselves to a process of continuous advancements and growth not only professionally but personally as well.
  • Critically assess their own personal philosophy of human beings as well as their strengths and weaknesses as they impact on the counselling process. 

Admission Requirements and Procedures:

  • Academic Qualifications: An accredited Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and official Transcript.
  • Application Form: Applicants must submit an application form for admission and start the application process to the programme. The application form requests general information about the applicant, their qualifications, relevant experience etc.
  • Curriculum Vitae: a complete CV specifying all academic and professional activities. 
  • Letters of Recommendation: Applicants must obtain at least two (2) recommendation letters from professors who are familiar with their academic work (letters from other sources will be accepted only in addition to the two references from previous instructors of the applicants).   • English Language Proficiency: TOEFL (paper-based test 600, computer-based test 250, internet-based test 100), IELTS 6.5, IGCSE B or NEPTON level ENGL-101. Students who graduated from an English-speaking University are exempt from this requirement.
  • Other Qualifications: Such as other graduate degrees earned, publications, relevant seminars attended, previous practical experience etc.
  • Statement of Purpose: Applicants are required to submit a comprehensive outline highlighting their academic and individual competencies and state why they believe they are suitable for admission to the programme, as well as their reflections regarding the expectations and value of the programme for their personal advancement and career development.
  • Individual Interviews: Having reviewed each application and applicant’s suitability against the entry criteria, an Interview Committee will determine which applicant may proceed to the interview. Interviews will be conducted in person or on-line where required.
  • Final Evaluation: In view of the limited number of applicants to be admitted to the programme, the Interview Committee will decide on the basis of merit and by evaluating specific criteria who are the most suitable candidates to be admitted to the programme.
  • Application Fee: An application fee of €55 (non-refundable) will need to be paid upon submission of the application. Alumni of the University of Nicosia are exempted from this.
