Professor Philippos Pouyioutas Reelected to the Position of Rector of the University of Nicosia

The process of electing the new Rector and Vice Rectors of the University of Nicosia was completed on 14 November 2019, with Professor Philippos Pouyioutas re-elected to the position of Rector on 4 November 2019.

In the subsequent elections for Vice Rectors, Professor Constantinos N. Phellas, current Vice Rector for Faculty and Research, was elected to the position of Senior Vice Rector; Professor Panayiotis Angelides was elected to the position of Vice Rector for Academic Affairs; and Professor Demetris Vrontis was elected to the position of Vice Rector for Faculty and Research.

The term of office of the new Rectorate comes into effect on 2 April 2020, until 1 April 2024.

About the Elections

A total of 328 persons had the right to cast a vote during the elections for the Rectorate. These consisted of 278 members of the Teaching Research Faculty and Special Teaching Faculty, as well as 50 students.

A total of four electoral processes were held between 4 November and 14 November: on 4 November, for the election of Rector; on 11 November, for the election of Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and for the election of Vice Rector for Faculty and Research; and, lastly, there was a second-round election on 14 November, between the 2 prevailing candidates (out of the 4) in the running for Vice Rector for Faculty and Research during the preceding election on 11 November.

There was a very high turnout throughout the electoral process, ranging between 85% and 89% (87% – 89% for Teaching Research Faculty and Special Teaching Faculty, and 72% – 82% for students, respectively).

Elections for Rector

Professor Philippos Pouyioutas was re-elected to the post of Rector of the University of Nicosia, following the electoral process on 4 November. Candidates for the position were the current Rector, Professor Pouyioutas, and Professor Nicos Trimikliniotis.

277 out of 328 persons voted in the process, registering a turnout of 84.46%. Specifically, 241 of the 278 members of the Teaching Research Faculty and Special Teaching Faculty (86.69%), and 36 of the 50 students (72%), cast their vote in the process. Of the total votes, 8 were blank and 4 were invalid, resulting in 265 eligible votes cast in the election. Incumbent Rector, Professor Pouyioutas, received 176 of the 265 votes cast (66.42%). Correspondingly, Professor Nicos Trimikliniotis received 89 of the 265 votes (33.58%).

 

Elections for Vice Rector posts

The elections to the positions of Vice Rector for Faculty and Research and Vice Rector for Academic Affairs both took place on 11 November 2019.

285 out of 328 persons voted in the process, registering a turnout of 86.89%. Specifically, 246 of the 278 members of the Teaching Research Faculty and Special Teaching faculty (88.48%), and 39 of the 50 students (78%), cast their vote in the electoral process.

Professor Constantinos Phellas, currently serving as Vice Rector for Faculty and Research, was elected Senior Vice-Rector unopposed.

Candidates for the position of Vice Rector for Academic Affairs were the former Vice Rector, Professor Edna Yamasaki-Patrikiou, and the current Dean of the School of Education, Professor Panayiotis Angelides. Of the total votes, 8 were blank and 1 was invalid, resulting in 276 eligible votes cast in the election to the position.

Professor Panagiotis Angelides was elected Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, receiving 156 of the 276 votes cast (56.52%). Professor Edna Yamasaki-Patrikiou received 120 of the 276 votes (43.48%).

Candidates for the position of Vice Rector for Faculty and Research were Professor Marios Constantinou; Professor Farid Mirbagheri; Professor Christos Panayides (the current Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences); and Professor Demetris Vrontis (the current Executive Dean of Distance Learning Education). Of the total votes, 2 were blank and 1 was invalid, resulting in 282 eligible votes cast in the election to the position.

None of the candidates secured an absolute majority. The two prevailing candidates were Professor Demetris Vrontis, who received 118 of the 282 votes cast (41.84%), and Professor Christos Panayides, who received 96 of the 282 votes cast (34.05%). Professor Marios Constantinou received 50 votes (17.73%) and Professor Farid Mir Bagheri received 18 votes (6.38%).

In accordance with University regulations, by-elections were held on 14 November between the two prevailing candidates. 293 out of 328 persons voted in the process, representing a turnout of 89.32%. Specifically, 252 of the 278 members of the Teaching Research Faculty and Special Teaching Staff (90.65%), and 41 of the 50 students (82%), cast their vote. Of the total votes, 8 were blank and 2 were invalid, resulting in 283 eligible votes cast in the election to the position.

Professor Dimitris Vrontis was elected Vice Rector for Faculty and Research, receiving 173 out of 283 votes cast (61.13%). Correspondingly, Professor Christos Panayides received 110 out of 283 votes (38.87%).
