EMSI Video Podcast Series – Episode 6: COVID-19 – The European Green Deal and the Future of Clean Energy in the Eastern Mediterranean

The European Green Deal (EGD) was established as the top item of the policy agenda of the European Commission prior to the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis. It represented a great leap in the trajectory already set by previous policy initiatives with the overarching aim of achieving climate neutrality for Europe by 2050. After the onset of the crisis, the European response has been a convergence between the policy goals of managing the public health crisis and fostering sustainability.

This podcast will address a number of key questions regarding the EGD and its impact on the region that are all the more pertinent in the post-COVID-19 era:

  • Given the ambitious nature of the EGD, how likely is it to meet its goals both in terms of measurable targets and general policy aims and how much of an impact is it likely to have on the global energy landscape?
  • As the EGD comes at a time of both geopolitical and economic volatility in energy-related developments both globally and in the region, how does it differentiate the prospects of these developments?
  • Given the evaluation of the milestones leading up to the EGD, is it implementable at the current stage of technological development, and what additional energy transformations might come into play in the near future?

Discussants:

  • Kirsten Westphal, Senior Associate, German Institute for International and Security Affairs
  • Nestor Fylaktos, Postdoctoral Fellow, The Cyprus Institute

Moderator:

  • Odysseas Christou, Assistant Professor, University of Nicosia
