Profile of the Programme
The programme of studies leading to a Doctoral degree in Exercise Science and Physical Education, with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction, is designed to prepare individuals for University/College teaching and research in professional preparation programs in exercise science and/or physical education dealing with curriculum development, teaching, and supervision of teachers and programs.
The main objectives of the programme are to:
- Provide students with the coursework, laboratory, and practical experiences in order to become leading sports and exercise scientists, educators and researchers.
- Provide students with a significant unique research experience contributing to the research and the literature in the studied academic field.
Prepare graduates for a career in academia or research in various settings, including colleges and universities, public and private agencies, clinical environments, government and business.

The minimum requirement for admission to the doctoral degree programme is a Master’s Degree and a Thesis Proposal.
PS. An applicant may be admitted to the programme subject to completing selected graduate courses offered by the Department, if so decided by the Department Postgraduate Programme Committee (DPPC) and/or by the main supervisor.
English Language Proficiency
Students satisfy the English requirements if their first degree was taught in English. Otherwise, they would need to present a minimum TOEFL score of 550 paper-based or 213 computer-based, GCSE “O” Level with minimum “C” or IELTS with a score of 6.5.
Αssessment comprises of the examination of the thesis proposal, the thesis, the presentation of the thesis as a public lecture and the oral examination (viva).
The student must complete 180 ECTS and all programme requirements.
A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 2.0 is required. Thus, although a ‘D-‘ is a PASS grade, in order to achieve a CPA of 2.0 an average grade of ‘C’ is required.
Upon successful completion of this program, the students should be able to:
- Develop sufficient expertise in content knowledge and become skillful in scholarly writing.
- Acquire an advanced hands-on research experience and laboratory skills and/or knowledge of research methods and statistics in order to provide a platform for a line of inquiry related to their research area of expertise.
- Design and lead research studies and acquire knowledge about the responsible conduct of research and practice ethical behaviors in research.
- Know about and abide by the codes of conduct or ethics associated with professional organizations in their chosen disciplines.
- Participate in research endeavors consistently by conducting their own research.
- Present independently research papers at international scientific conferences.
- Be able to publish research papers in peer-reviewed journals.
- Be able to prepare and submit research proposals to relevant funding agencies.
- Work with human participants and/or elite athletes and/or special populations and conduct human intervention studies.
- Teach courses in curriculum design, methods of teaching, foundations in PE, and supervise student teachers*.
*: Only those graduates who will accomplish a pure PE and Sports Pedagogy research
