Medical student earn distinctions at Pantheo Annual Congress 2026

Students from the UNIC Medical School received awards for their oral and poster presentations at the Pantheo Annual Congress 2026, held in Limassol from 24 to 26 April.

Organised annually by Pantheo Eye Centre, the congress took place under the auspices of the Cyprus Ophthalmological Society, in collaboration with the Midland Ophthalmological Society in the UK and the UNIC Medical School.

The event brought together eye care professionals from Cyprus and abroad to discuss current developments in ophthalmology and to share clinical knowledge and perspectives.

As part of the prestigious Alistair Fielder Prize in Ophthalmology, which invites ophthalmology trainees and medical students to showcase exceptional case presentations, MD Year 6 student Emma Nordahl won first prize for her oral presentation, Early Ocular Features of Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis: A Diagnostic Challenge. MD Year 3 student Tanadel Tarbouch and MD Year 6 student Natalie George Ayad were jointly awarded second prize for their poster, Lifestyle Factors and Intraocular Pressure in Glaucoma: Evidence-Based Changes with Clinically Meaningful Impact.

The Medical School also contributed to the academic programme of the congress. Chloe Antoniou, Associate Dean for Students, delivered a welcome address on behalf of the School and introduced the speakers for the two University of Nicosia keynote lectures.

These were delivered by Dr Paris Tranos, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Ophthalmica in Thessaloniki, who presented Novel OCT Biomarkers and Their Clinical Application, and Dr Pantelis Papadopoulos, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Metropolitan Hospital in Athens, who presented Quest for Perfection in Refractive Cataract and Lens Surgery.

The students’ presentations and posters were well received by attending clinicians, including consultants from the UK. Their success came in a competitive setting that included medical students from the UK and other European countries.
