Cyprus Food Cultural Heritage Competition

CITIES2030 together with the Union of Cyprus Communities, the University of Nicosia (UNIC), and the UNIC Environmental Health Research Centre, are launching an interdisciplinary student competition for the academic year 2022-2023 on Cyprus Food Cultural Heritage.

The Cyprus Food Cultural Heritage Competition is designed to look at the gastronomical cultural heritage of the Troodos Mountain region through an interdisciplinary lens and raise awareness of dietary traditions and the sustainability of local food products in the wake of climate change. Students will benefit from working and interacting within an interdisciplinary team, sharing ideas, listening to peers, bringing out knowledge and skills and applying those to a common goal.

Who can participate

UNIC students from the Department of Life Sciences, Department of Management (Programmes of Hospitality and Tourism, Leisure and Events) and the Department of Design and Multimedia are invited to participate in the Cyprus Food Cultural Heritage competition.

How to participate

UNIC Students can apply by filling out the registration form as a group or on their own, who will be later matched with other students.

Groups will be constituted of at least 3 students (max. 5), with at least one student in the group coming from each different area, i.e., Life Sciences, Hospitality and Tourism, Leisure and Events, and Design and Multimedia.

Participants are required to collaborate in creating and delivering a product in any of the below categories:

  1. Restructure and prepare a Cypriot traditional recipe.
  2. Design a Cypriot traditional cooking book – (ex.: interactive and/or conventional – adding videos, nutritional info, little stories).
  3. Revitalize Cyprus food cultural heritage.
  4. Create a 3–5-minute video or animation analyzing the cultural roots of a traditional food recipe or a locally produced product.
  5. Create an Infographic that presents the cultural roots of a traditional food recipe or locally produced product.

Prizes

A committee consisting of industry experts and University of Nicosia professors will judge and award monetary prizes to the groups that present the best results within their categories.

  • 1st prize – €600
  • 2nd prize – €350
  • 3rd prize – €200

Prizes can also take the form of book publication, and publication of their results on the website of regional government sites.

Terms and Conditions for participation

  1. The students from the 3 departments (Life Sciences, Management (Programmes in Hospitality and Tourism, Leisure and Events), Design and Multimedia) will be matched according to the categories that they have chosen.
    An exception will be made if students have already applied as a group.
  2. In all categories, it is mandatory:
    • The presentation of the nutritional values of dishes and/or food
    • The history of the particular dish/food and the area where it comes from (Historic overview)
    • Appropriate quoting and referencing of sources for all the material utilized. Plagiarism is considered inappropriate and constitutes grounds for disqualification from the competition.
  3. As part of the CITIES2030 project, all products derived from this competition are automatically considered open source.
  4. Student members of each group will be required to sign a Commitment Letter.
