You are invited to a lecture organised by the Department of Languages and Literature in the context of our English Lecture/Seminar series. The lecture will take place on February 19 at 4pm in the Rousseau Ampitheatre (Europa Building). The title of the lecture is ‘Lies, and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: Reading Deception in Fiction’. The lecturer is Dr James Mackay, Assistant Professor of British and American Literatures at the European University, Cyprus. Please see below for further details.

Abstract:

This lecture will explore the question of untruths and the way that they are represented in and interact with the meanings of various fictional texts.  The examples will include the rediscovery of a lost Shakespeare play in 18th century London, the story of a Swiss castaway, the birth of modern Australian poetry, and an American author who combines high literary theory with a career as a physics professor.  In all of these Mackay’s concern will be with the ways that their works present a challenge to conventional methods of literary interpretation.
