ITALIAN DESIGN DAY – March 2nd, 2017
“Italian Design: from Atelier to Factory, from Local to National to Global. Osvaldo Borsani’s architectural & design legacy”
Special guest from Milan, architect & designer Tommaso Fantoni Borsani, founder of TOMO architects and descendant of Osvaldo Borsani.
On the same day, in 100 cities around the world, 100 lectures and discussions will take place simultaneously. This will be the beginning of establishing a network of communication that will bring together designers in multiple destinations around the globe and jump-start a new dialogue.
A panoramic lecture will be given by Tomasso Fantoni Borsani on the origins and development of the furniture production District of Brianza (Milan region) 1880’s-1940’s, the Biennale of Monza and the creation of a national market with the case study of Gaetano Borsani with the Atelier of Varedo and the first experiences of quality furniture.
Osvaldo Borsani, the son, architect and entrepreneur, continues the tradition and transforms the artisanal atelier into an organised factory. Some of the most significant episodes of this pivotal moment for Italian design through the most successful projects of Borsani, Tecno and others. The internationalisation of the brand through a world widespread distribution network and collaborations with international design key figures like Foster, Rogers, Boffil, and Ambasz.

About the Speaker:
Tommaso Fantoni Borsani architect and designer graduated at Politecnico di Milano in 2000, after Erasmus experiences at ETSAB Barcelona and Polytechnique Superieure in Paris la Seine, makes an internship of more than ten years by the studio of Norman Foster in London and New York, where among others, he is involved in projects such as the new headquarters of the London city district GLA in Tower Bridge, residential buildings in Sankt Moritz Switzerland, Tower 2 at Ground Zero in New York, Sperone Westwater Gallery in Bowery, New York, and the private residence of Norman Foster in New York.
In 2011 he returned to Milan and founded TOMOarchitects, a multidisciplinary team of architects and designers passionate about sustainable, contemporary, simple thus strong architecture. The most important realisations since opening in Milan are the Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro in Milan, the tree house sculpture “Garden’s Jewel” with Loris Cecchini and various interiors and product design presented at the Salone del Mobile.
