Synopsis
Deeply human story about the friendship and first love in times of war and cruelty. The movie is, in essence, a narrative of a love triangle between three 17-year-olds. Moni is a shy young Jewish boy living in Sofia, Giogio is his more worldly Bulgarian friend and Shelli is his flirtatious cousin who lives across the border.
Uniquely in this wartime, Bulgarians resisted Hitler’s order for mass expulsion of their Jewish population, saving some 48,000 Bulgarian Jews from almost certain death. Even so, Bulgaria was not in a position to save the life of around 11,500 Jews from neighboring territories, who being under German jurisdiction were deported.
This is the first film jointly made by cinematographers from Bulgaria and Israel and represents the last part of a trilogy directed by Ivan Nichev dedicated to the rescue of Bulgarian Jews during WWII. Alongside the young artists starring in, one of the most famous film actors of Bulgaria and Israel are playing roles in the movie. The Bulgarian Cinema Council has picked “Bulgarian Rhapsody” as the Bulgarian film to participate in the race for 2014's Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
