The exhibition presents works produced by students of the Department of Design and Multimedia, University of Nicosia, as well as artworks by students from state and private Cypriot high schools that were developed in the context of the thematic of the competition memo | The notion of MEMORY through the visual arts.*
The thematic of the competition and the exhibition considers the notion of memory and remembrance that is hidden beneath the word memo. The word memo derives from the word memorandum and the verb memoro. In Greek memo means a note, a report, or the process of remembering an important event. Therefore it can be considered to have the form of a note, a document or some other type of communication which assists our memory to record events or observations that are related to a specific theme.
The students were/are asked: to creatively explore and engage with the concepts of memory and remembrance, to consider old and contemporary urban or rural myths or realities, to recall images from past instances of urban life that are no longer a reality, and scenes which have not been recorded or which have been excluded from the grander narratives which we can find in history books. To record stories of a particular social group (e.g. a family), a city or a village and contemporary (hi)stories that they would like to remember in the future.
The memo exhibition is being staged at the offices of the newspaper “Politis”, a building which in the past used to host the important printing firm of the Zavallis Brothers. In this space, amidst the old printing machines, a series of artworks created by young people show us how the past forms the present and how the present shapes tomorrow’s culture…

«Σκέψου το χρόνο σαν να έχει σχήμα, κάτι που μπορείς να δεις, σαν μια σειρά υγρών διαφανειών που βρίσκονται η μία πάνω στην άλλη. Δεν κοιτάς πίσω κατά μήκος του χρόνου αλλά κάτω, διαμέσου του, όπως το νερό. Μερικές φορές έρχεται αυτό στην επιφάνεια, μερικές φορές κάτι άλλο, μερικές φορές τίποτα. Τίποτα δεν χάνεται».

Η έκθεση παρουσιάζει έργα φοιτητών του τμήματος Σχεδιασμού και Πολυμέσων, καθώς και έργα μαθητών από δημόσια και ιδιωτικά σχολεία της Κύπρου που αναπτύχθηκαν στo πλαίσιo της θεματικής του διαγωνισμού memo | H ΜNHMH από εικαστική σκοπιά.*
Η θεματική του διαγωνισμού και της έκθεσης πραγματεύεται την ιδέα της μνήμης και την ιδέα της υπενθύμισης που κρύβεται πίσω από την λέξη memo. Η λέξη memo προέρχεται από τη λέξη memorandum και το ρήμα memoro. Στα ελληνικά, memo σημαίνει σημείωμα, αναφορά ή υπενθύμιση ενός σημαντικού γεγονότος. Κατ’ επέκταση είναι μια σημείωση, ένα αρχείο ή κάποια άλλη μορφή επικοινωνίας που βοηθάει τη μνήμη να καταγράψει γεγονότα ή παρατηρήσεις που αφορούν σε κάποιο θέμα.
Οι μαθητές / φοιτητές κλήθηκαν να διερευνήσουν δημιουργικά και να ασχοληθούν με την ιδέα της μνήμης και της υπενθύμισης, να ασχοληθούν με παλιούς και σύγχρονους αστικούς και υπαίθριους μύθους ή πραγματικότητες, να ανακαλέσουν από το παρελθόν μορφές της αστικής ζωής που έχουν εκλείψει και σκηνές οι οποίες δεν πρόλαβαν να καταγραφούν ή απορρίφθηκαν από τις μεγάλες αφηγήσεις που βρίσκουμε στα βιβλία ιστορίας. Να καταγράψουν την ιστορία μιας κοινωνικής ομάδας (π.χ. μιας οικογένειας), μιας πόλης ή ενός χωριού, καθώς και τωρινές ιστορίες, που θα ήθελαν να θυμούνται οι ίδιοι μετά από χρόνια.
Η έκθεση memo διοργανώνεται στο χώρο όπου σήμερα στεγάζονται τα γραφεία της εφημερίδας “Πολίτης” και που παλαιότερα υπήρξε η έδρα του σημαντικού τυπογραφείου των Αδελφών Ζαβαλή. Στο ισόγειο του ιστορικού κτιρίου, ανάμεσα στις τυπογραφικές μηχανές του παρελθόντος, μια σειρά από σύγχρονα έργα νεαρών καλλιτεχνών μας δείχνουν με ποιον τρόπο το παρελθόν διαμορφώνει το παρόν και πώς το παρόν σχηματίζει τον πολιτισμό του αύριο…
*Η θεματική αναπτύχθηκε αρχικά από το Tμήμα Σχεδιασμού Πολυμέσων στο πλαίσιο του Παγκύπριου διαγωνισμού Εικαστικών Τεχνών για τη δευτεροβάθμια εκπαίδευση, Γραφείο Επιθεωρητή Εικαστικών Τεχνών, Μέση Εκπαίδευση, Υπουργείο Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού.
