Dr Demetra Demetriou

Demetra Demetriou holds a PhD (2013; summa cum laude) and an MPhil (2008; summa cum laude) in Comparative Literature from Paris-Sorbonne University (Paris IV) and a BA (2007) in Greek Philology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She received undergraduate and graduate scholarships for excellence by the Cyprus State Scholarship Foundation and the A. G. Leventis Foundation and has been awarded grants by the University of Bristol and the Norman University Pole. She is currently an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Nicosia (Department of Education), where she has been teaching since 2014. She currently works, additionally, as a Certified Translator (French Language) at the Press and Information Office of the Republic of Cyprus and as a Modern Greek (Language and Literature) Instructor in Secondary Education. In 2015 she worked as an Adjunct Lecturer at the Open University of Cyprus, were she was responsible for the design, the coordination and teaching of the module “Literature of Cyprus”. She has also taught at the Department of French and European Studies of the University of Cyprus in 2015 (in French) and the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies of the University of Cyprus in 2013. From 2011 to 2016 she participated in various research programs led by the University of Cyprus (Department of French and European Studies; Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies; Department of History and Archaeology). Demetra specializes in the fields of comparative literary studies, myth criticism, postmodern and feminist theory, and cultural and literary theory. Her essays on Modern Greek literature of the 20th-21st centuries, with a particular interest in the work of Yannis Ritsos, George Seferis, contemporary women’s writing (1970- ), and Greek literature of Cyprus offer new comparative and theoretical insights into the study of Modern Greek literature and were presented in peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, and international scientific conferences.
