UNIC Athens Opportunity Scholarship (Need‑Based)

1. Means-Tested Tuition Scholarship

A means‑tested tuition scholarship for students from lower and middle‑income families. Awards are determined by a transparent points system that considers per‑capita annual gross income and defined social/health factors.

Financial Aid Policy

Our university is committed to supporting students from lower- and middle-income families through means-tested tuition scholarships. Scholarships are awarded based on a fair and structured points system that takes into account household income, as well as specific social, health, and residence factors.

Scholarship Tiers

Scholarship percentages are determined by the total points calculated for each applicant. While the exact criteria and thresholds may vary, tuition reductions range from 10% for eligible students with fewer points to up to 40% for those with the highest points.

How Points Are Calculated

Points are assessed based on the following factors:

1. Household Income

Points are awarded by considering the per-capita annual gross income of the applicant’s household (based on the latest available official tax data). To ensure fairness and accuracy, the algorithm used to determine income bands and points is updated annually, reflecting changes in average income statistical data.

2. Social, Health, and Residence Factors

Additional points may be granted for specific situational criteria, such as:

  • Orphan status (one or both parents)
  • Court-documented parental divorce
  • Receipt of public assistance by the applicant or family members
  • Serious illness or disability affecting either the applicant or their parents
  • Relocation to Athens for studies involving housing expenses

The points earned across these categories are added together to determine a student’s placement within the scholarship tiers.

Eligibility

  • Admitted and enrolled full‑time in an undergraduate programme at UNIC Athens.
  • Greek and other EU/EEA citizens are assessed on identical criteria (non‑discrimination).

Required Documents

Submit the following to the Admissions/Financial Aid department after admission (for both parents/guardians, as applicable):

  • Latest Greek/EU tax return (e.g., AADE/E1 or EU equivalent) showing gross income; include any official documentation of public assistance.
  • If relevant: divorce decree & alimony order; death certificate (orphan status); medical/disability certificate from a public authority; municipal residence certificate and rental agreement (relocation).
  • If you are unemployed, provide the Δ.ΥΠ.Α. unemployment certificate (or EU equivalent).

Renewal

  • Reapply annually with updated documents (recommended by 30 June).

2. Large Family Scholarship

Students who come from large families (4 children or more) are eligible for a 15% scholarship for the entire duration of the programme. Applicants must provide a copy of the family status certificate, as proof of eligibility.

UNIC Academic Family Scholarship

University of Nicosia graduates wishing to apply for a second degree at UNIC Athens are eligible for a 10% scholarship for the entire duration of the programme.

Families with two or more siblings studying at the University during the same semester are eligible for a 10% scholarship for each child.

Non-scholarship Financial Aid

The TIP helps families smooth cash flow across the academic year while keeping costs predictable.

Who it’s for: Undergraduate students at UNIC Athens billed at the beginning of each semester.

3. Student Loans (Third‑Party Banks)

Finance a portion of your tuition through Greek banks.

UNIC Athens will help you direct you to options and provide you with necessary UNIC Athens documents. The University is not the lender.

Who it’s for: Undergraduate and postgraduate students at UNIC Athens.

What it’s not: A scholarship or tuition waiver. These are bank loans you must repay.

Programme at a glance

Parameter  Summary
Lender  Independent Greek/EU banking institutions (third‑party)
Typical coverage  Up to 50% of annual tuition (varies by bank and profile)
Disbursement  Single or staged (e.g., per semester/month); often can pay directly to UNIC
While studying  Many banks offer interest‑only payments or in‑school grace options (varies)
Repayment  Begins after disbursement or after studies (bank‑specific); term length varies
Rate type  Preferential student pricing; fixed or variable APR determined by the bank
Fees  May include origination/arrangement fees; check the bank’s disclosure
Guarantor  A co‑signer is often required (parent/guardian or qualifying sponsor)
Currency  EUR
Timing  Apply 4–6 weeks before fees are due to allow bank processing

Most banks will ask for proof that you can cover any remaining tuition after the loan (personal/family funds, scholarships, TIP, or work‑study).

Eligibility

  • Admission & enrolment: You must be admitted and enrolled (or holding an unconditional offer) at UNIC Athens.
  • Residency & status: Greek/EU students usually apply with a local bank. International students may need a resident co‑signer or to use a bank in their home country.
  • Creditworthiness: Banks assess income, credit history, and co‑signer strength. Decisions are solely the bank’s.

How to apply

  1. Choose a bank
We’ll provide links to local banks.
  2. Collect documents (typical bank requirements)
    Passport/ID; proof of address
    – UNIC documents (Offer/Admission Letter, Tuition Certificate, Scholarship letter if any)
    – Financials for borrower and co‑signer (recent payslips or employer letter, latest tax return, bank statements)
    – Residence permit (if applicable)
  3. Submit application
Follow the bank’s process for pre‑approval and final underwriting.
  4. Coordinate disbursement
If possible, ask your bank to pay UNIC Athens directly and use staged disbursements to reduce accrued interest.

Tips to reduce your total cost

  • Borrow only what you need. Apply scholarships and TIP first; finance the remainder.
  • Prefer staged disbursement (per semester/month) to limit interest accrual.
  • Check prepayment rules. Many banks allow early repayment (sometimes with a small fee).
  • Understand variable vs fixed rates. Variable rates can increase over time.

Important disclosures

  • Independent lending. UNIC Athens is not a lender and does not guarantee approval. Loan terms, APRs, fees, and decisions are set by the bank.
  • Read the bank’s disclosures. Review the European Standardised Information Sheet (ESIS) / key facts before signing.

FAQs

How much can I borrow?
Banks commonly finance up to 50% of tuition, but limits depend on the bank and your/co‑signer’s profile.

Can international students get a loan?
Often yes, with an eligible co‑signer or by using a home‑country bank.

Can I combine a bank loan with TIP?
Yes. Many students borrow less and then use TIP to spread the remainder at 0% interest.

Will taking a loan affect my scholarships?
No. Scholarships are independent of loan decisions.
