Vet student co-authors research publication
Fourth-year veterinary student Sotiris Chrysanthopoulos has co-authored a scientific article published in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Molecular Sciences, in collaboration with Dr Konstantinos V. Arsenopoulos, Associate Professor of Cattle and Herd Medicine at the School of Veterinary Medicine, and Dr Elias Papadopoulos of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
The publication, titled “Molecular Investigation of Eimeria spp. Infection in Weaned Dairy Calves in Thessaly, Greece, and Associated Risk Factors”, presents important findings on Eimeria infections in dairy calves and the farm management practices associated with an increased risk of transmission.
The study provides new molecular epidemiological data on bovine coccidiosis and highlights key risk factors in intensive dairy farming systems. Based on the analysis of 665 faecal samples from 35 dairy farms in Thessaly, Greece, the researchers found an overall Eimeria prevalence of 46.3%, with Eimeria bovis and Eimeria zuernii identified as the most frequently detected species.
Commenting on the publication, Dr Arsenopoulos noted that “Sotiris made a significant contribution to the methodology and investigation of the study, describing his involvement as an excellent example of student engagement in high-level research activity at the University of Nicosia”.
