Profile
Styliani Philippou is an Assistant Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Nicosia Medical School.
Dr Philippou holds a BSc in Biomedical Sciences (Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK), an MSc in Medical Sciences (University of Bristol, UK), and a PhD in Molecular Medicine from the Cyprus Institute of Neurology & Genetics.
She completed four years of postdoctoral training at the Department of Molecular Genetics, Function & Therapy at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology & Genetics, focusing on the development of cell-specific aptamers for RNAi-based therapeutic delivery in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. From November 2022 to October 2025, she served as a Scientist in the R&D Department of Medicover Genetics (Nicosia, Cyprus), contributing to prenatal testing product development. She currently holds the position of R&D Associate Senior Scientist at Cell-Free Genomics Ltd (Nicosia, Cyprus), a biotechnology start-up specializing in genomic applications in fetal–maternal medicine.
Her research interests focus primarily on the development of next-generation non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) platforms for the accurate diagnosis of genetic disorders using cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma. In parallel, she is committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of scientists, fostering technical excellence, critical thinking, and leadership within a translational research environment focused on clinical genetic diagnostics.
