Profile
Panayiotis Hadjicostas, MD, PhD, FACS, is a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Nicosia Medical School and a Consultant in General Surgery and Surgical Oncology and is an Associate at the Nicosia Polyclinic Private Hospital in Cyprus.
Professor Hadjicostas obtained his PhD from the University of Athens and his MD from the University of Patras. He completed his higher specialty training at the Hippocrateon University Hospital in Athens and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the (American) Society of Surgical Oncology. He is also a member of the European Society of Surgical Oncology and other scientific organisations.
His special interests include Surgical Oncology, Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery, and Hepatobiliary Surgery. He trained as a Transplant Surgeon at King’s College Hospital in London and worked as a Consultant Transplant Surgeon at the Paraskevaidion Transplant Center from 1992 to 1995.
Professor Hadjicostas has extensive experience, with 23 years of service in the Cyprus Ministry of Health, including positions at Nicosia General Hospital and Larnaca General Hospital. His last role was as the Director/Chairman of the Department of Surgery. He introduced innovative techniques and technologies in Surgical Oncology and developed the national ‘Liver Tumour Destruction (Radiofrequency Ablation-RFA) programme’ from 2004 to 2012. He pioneered Liver and Pancreas Surgery in Nicosia General Hospital and nationally and was one of the two surgeons who performed the first Pancreatic Resection in Cyprus (Whipple’s procedure for pancreatic cancer) in 1992.
He is dedicated to surgical education, with thorough experience in teaching and training Surgical Residents, Junior Doctors, and Medical Students. He received extensive and continuous training from hospitals in the USA and UK and has pursued professional development.
His research interests encompass General Surgery (including complicated and complex revision operations), Surgical Oncology (Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, difficult GI cancers, colorectal, gastric, peritoneal carcinomatosis, pseudomyxoma peritonei, HIPEC, sarcomas, adrenal and other retroperitoneal tumours), Transplantation Surgery (liver and kidneys), Trauma Surgery/Open Abdomen, Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery.
