Chrysanthos Georgiou is a Clinical Professor of Surgery Trauma & Emergency Surgery at the University of Nicosia Medical School and Public Health & Trauma Systems Director of the Trauma Centre and General Surgery Services at the Nicosia General Hospital
Professor Georgiou is a senior academic surgeon with extensive international experience in trauma surgery, emergency surgery, surgical critical care and trauma systems development. He trained at the LAC+USC Medical Center under Professor Demetrios Demetriades, completing a “Research Fellowship in Trauma & Surgical Critical Care – USC Los Angeles (2006–2007)”.
Professor Georgiou received his MD from the Medical University of Sofia and completed his General Surgery Specialisation at the University of Athens. He subsequently earned a PhD from the University of Athens, focusing on surgical science and clinical research. His academic development includes an Honorary Clinical Research Fellowship at Imperial College London and a Master’s degree in Surgical Infections from Aristotele University of Thessaloniki. He has also completed advanced training in robotic surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery, and holds FEBS certifications in Emergency Surgery and Trauma.
Professor Georgiou is the founder and Director of the first Level I Trauma Centre in Cyprus, leading national efforts to modernise trauma care, establish trauma registry infrastructure and implement trauma governance frameworks.
From 2010 to 2020, he served as Chairperson of the Cyprus Anti‑Drugs Council / National Addictions Authority and represented Cyprus at EU level as National Drug Coordinator. Under his leadership, “Cyprus strengthened evidence-based addiction prevention strategies… reinforced harm reduction and rehabilitation frameworks…”.
He has held academic appointments at St George’s University of London Medical School and the European University Cyprus, and is National Director for ATLS and PHTLS. His international educational activity includes invited lectures and faculty roles in major trauma and emergency surgery conferences.
Professor Georgiou has authored more than 25 peer‑reviewed publications in leading journals, including World Journal of Surgery, Journal of Trauma, Addiction, and European Journal of Trauma & Emergency Surgery. He is co‑author and editor of multiple editions of Assessment and Management of Trauma, including the 8th edition (2023). He his research interest is focused on trauma management.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Fellow of the European Board of Surgery (Emergency Surgery & Trauma), Vice‑President of the Cyprus Medical Association, President of the Cyprus Surgical Society, and Reviewer for the European Journal of Trauma & Emergency Surgery.
