Dr Athena Michaelides, MD and Dr Sean Zadik, MBBS are the recipients of the Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran Prize in Obstetrics and Gynaecology 2020.

Starting from this year, the prize will be offered on an annual basis following a donation by Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Nicosia Medical School and Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St George’s, University of London.

The prize, €500, is accompanied by a certificate of achievement and is shared by the MBBS and the MD6 graduands who achieved the highest score in O&G examinations.


The selection process is as follows:

  • For MBBS, the graduand who achieved the highest score on the O&G items in the P Year YSKT examination at first attempt and passes F Year at first attempt will receive the award.
  • For MD6, the graduand who achieved the highest score in the O&G course examination in Year 5 at first attempt and passes Year 6 at first attempt will receive the award.
  • In case of a tie, student performance in relevant OSCE stations, scores on O&G items in the final year examinations and academic performance across the years will be considered. A final decision will be taken by the Awards Committee.
  • Both students should have a clear professionalism record.

The prize is awarded during the annual Graduation Ceremony.  Due to the Covid-19 pandemic this year’s Ceremony was cancelled.  We hope that next year we will have both winners on stage and congratulate them on their achievements.
