UNIC researchers contribute to new publication on brain-heart biomarkers in Alzheimer’s disease

The University of Nicosia is pleased to announce a new peer-reviewed publication on a promising approach to Alzheimer’s disease research that examines how brain activity and heart function can be studied together to support earlier detection and monitoring.

The review focuses on the combined use of EEG and heart rate variability as an integrated biomarker framework for Alzheimer’s disease, with findings suggesting that brain-heart coupling may offer improved sensitivity in identifying early cognitive decline.

Contributing to the publication are Professor Stelios Georgiades, Professor Aleksandar Jovanovic, and Dr Nicoletta Nicolaou from the UNIC Medical School, Dr George Loucaides from the School of Life and Health Sciences, and first author, PhD candidate with the Medical School, Benson Botchway.

Dr Nicoletta Nicolaou commented: ‘This publication reflects the growing importance of interdisciplinary research in understanding complex conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. By looking at the interaction between brain and heart signals, we are moving toward more accessible and physiologically meaningful tools that could support earlier detection and more personalised monitoring in the future’.
