Medical student wins ‘Best Student Poster’ at Newcastle’s Medical Trainees Conference
Final year medical student Fathima-Asma Anverdeen, has achieved notable success at the Medical Trainees Conference in Newcastle, organised by the Trainees & Members’ Committee of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. The conference, a key annual gathering in the medical community, known for its extensive programme featuring lectures by leading medical professionals and a variety of clinical sessions, was held on 26 January 2024.
Fathima-Asma’s poster titled ‘Ink to OR: Surgical Debridement for Necrotising Fasciitis Complicating Tattoo’ received exceptional feedback, and was honoured with the Best Student Poster award.
‘During my general surgery placement, I came across a fascinating case that involved an undiagnosed diabetes complication, necessitating emergency surgical debridement for an infected tattoo. Seizing the opportunity, I submitted an abstract on this unique case for the Medical Trainees Conference, where it not only got accepted but also earned me the chance to present it through a poster. Winning this award, amidst strong competition from both students and doctors, came as a pleasant surprise. As an aspiring surgeon, I see this accolade as just the initial step towards hopefully a promising surgical career. Grateful for the recognition and excited for the journey ahead.’
