Medical School students win EIT Health i-Days Nicosia 2025
A team of MD Year 6 students – Abdullah Ayesh, Elyaa Saleh, Jessica AL-Rabadi and Yasmeen Yousef – won first place at this year’s EIT Health i-Days Nicosia innovation competition.
The annual two-day programme organised by Junior Achievement Cyprus with the support of EIT Health and the Research and Innovation Foundation, offers young people a unique opportunity to develop as leaders and innovators in the field of health. Participants explore real MedTech challenges, connect with experts, and develop solutions for the future of healthcare.
The team’s winning proposal was a smart, reusable clip-on sensor designed to detect postoperative leaks following gastrointestinal surgeries. Using LED technology, the device monitors drain outflow in real time and alerts medical staff at the first sign of danger, helping improve patient safety and surgical outcomes.
By winning the local competition, the team will represent Cyprus at the i-Days 2025 European finals on 27–28 November 2025 in Paris, France. This final event will bring together winning teams from national competitions across Europe to compete for prizes and further develop their healthcare innovation skills.
This marks the third local victory for a UNIC Medical School team in the competition, demonstrating how well our curriculum prepares students for such challenges.
