Transforming Cyprus into an Energy Hub

The first part of the presentation will be delivered by Dr. Alkis Thrassou who recently complete an internship at a private firm specializing in services related to claims handling and risk surveys. The speaker acted as an internal consultant and undertook an investigation into the opportunities for and potentialities of the collaboration in Cyprus, over the next few years, in relation to the emerging oil and gas sector. His presentation shall include the generic descriptive and prescriptive findings in relation to the present and future of the Cypriot oil and gas industry. Moreover, and of special interest to oil and gas students and professionals, the presentation shall include the benefits and opportunities arising from this new industry, at both the individual and business levels.
Mr. Nicolas Loizou, candidate for the MSc in Oil, Gas and Energy Engineering, at the University of Nicosia, will present his internship experience regarding the preliminary design of COSMOS’ oil storage tanks. The Cyprus Organization for Storage and Management of Oil Stocks (COSMOS) is a non-profit semi-governmental organization. Mr. Loizou’s presentation will be divided into two parts: (a) first a brief description of COSMOS, its mission, activities and future plans. Moreover, the SEVESO directive will be outlined in light of Cyprus’s decision to construct a national oil tank depot and (b) Second, the technical characteristics of constructing an oil storage facility including a geotechnical study, designs and types of oil tanks and their safety limits will be presented.
