Abstract

The modern period of the history of the world has been faced with certain processes that indicate the crisis of a so called “European tolerance” theory and multiculturalism policies in Old Europe. Different regions of the world have been affected by prolonged turmoil spurred not only by economic competition, but also domestic and international ethnical and religious conflicts. The realities of the modern world significantly raise the importance and urgency of a professional open discussion aimed at finding competent and substantive responses to the acute challenges. Russia appears to be a suitable case to learn from as regards its experience of nation and state building, since the one thing that has remained constant throughout the millennium-long history of Russia has been an obvious priority of inter-cultural and inter-ethnical harmony as an essential condition of its very existence.
