Sports Awards Ceremony 2025-2026

The awards ceremony of honouring those who distinguished themselves in Cyprus University Sports Competitions was held at the University of Nicosia for the eleventh year

In an atmosphere of pride and emotion, the University of Nicosia honoured, on Thursday, 11 June 2026, the students who distinguished themselves in the University Championships of the 2025-2026 season. The keynote speaker of this year’s event was the Olympian and Distinguished Professor Stavros Tziortzis.

In the presence of the academic and administrative leadership of the University of Nicosia, prominent figures from Cypriot sports, and parents, the ceremony was held for the eleventh year, having now become an established annual institution.

Dr Emilios Solomou, Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus University Sports Federation and Honorary Director of the UNESCO Chair of the University of Nicosia, and Professor Nicos Kartakoullis, President of the Council of the University of Nicosia, highlighted the importance of University Sports and its connection with academic progress. They congratulated the students, their parents, and all those who support them, while praising both the role of the Cyprus University Sports Federation and the contribution of the University of Nicosia, including through scholarships and the support of dual careers. They also expressed their appreciation to Professor Stavros Tziortzis for his career, ethos, and contribution to sports.

Paschalina Magniti, representing Cyprus Sports Organisation, underlined the importance of achieving success in parallel in both sports and studies, noting that the new strategic planning of the Cyprus Sports Organisation places emphasis on University Sports.

During his speech, Professor and Olympian Stavros Tziortzis referred to the difficulties, hard work, and sacrifices of his sports career, which led him to the Greek Olympic team, to participation in the Balkan Games, to 6th place at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, and to the record he still holds today in the 400m with hurdles. He then congratulated the students of the University of Nicosia and received an honorary award from Mr Kartakoullis.

The University of Nicosia congratulates the athletes Styliana Ioannidou (4th place, high jump), Petros Christodoulides (5th place, judo), Kalia Antoniou (6th place, swimming), and Kyriakos Markides (artistic gymnastics), who participated in the World University Championship in Germany in July 2025, as well as the Student Ambassador of the International University Sports Federation, Stefani Nikolaou.
