The University of Nicosia Erasmus Office is pleased to welcome Mr. Yoshinori Sakamoto, Staff Member at Akita International University (Japan), who will visit the University through an Erasmus+ Staff Mobility funded by the Erasmus+ Programme.

As part of his mobility, Mr. Sakamoto will deliver a presentation entitled ‘Japanese Culture through the Eyes of Martial Arts: Kendo’, on 7 July 2026, 15:00-16:00, at Discovery Hall, at the University of Nicosia.

The presentation will explore how Japanese society has developed its modern identity and distinctive cultural values through the perspective of traditional martial arts. Participants will gain insights into the philosophy of Kendo and the principles of discipline, respect, perseverance and self-development that continue to shape Japanese culture today. The session will begin with a lecture on the cultural evolution of the Japanese mindset, followed by a live demonstration of the traditional martial arts of Kendo and Iaido.

The event will also feature Dr. Panagiotis Vagianas, President of the Cyprus Kendo & Iaido Association, who will participate as co-organiser and guest speaker.

This Erasmus+ mobility reflects the University of Nicosia’s commitment to internationalisation and intercultural learning by bringing together experts from partner universities and providing the University community with unique opportunities to engage with diverse cultures and traditions.

Students, faculty and staff are warmly invited to attend this unique cultural event and discover the values and traditions that have shaped one of Japan’s most iconic martial arts.
