Useful Information
Emergency Numbers
Keep emergency numbers saved in your phone. Operators on 112 speak Greek, English, and French, and calls are free from any phone. Use 112 when you are unsure which service you need, or use the dedicated lines below.
112 – European emergency number
100 – Police
166 – Ambulance and medical emergencies (EKAB)
199 – Fire service
108 – Coast guard
1571 – Tourist police helpline, 24 hours
Hospitals
Hospitals and urgent care near campus are straightforward. Asklepieio Voulas is the main public hospital for the south suburbs in Voula. Mediterraneo Hospital is a private hospital in Glyfada, and Metropolitan Hospital is in Neo Faliro, within the HHG network. For serious issues, call 166 or 112, then follow the dispatcher’s instructions.
Pharmacies
Pharmacies handle many minor needs and give practical advice. After hours, a rotating list of on duty pharmacies serves each area. Check the Pharmaceutical Association of Attica’s duty list or use a live directory before you go.
Mental Health
Mental health support is available at any time. The national psychosocial support line 10306 operates free and 24 hours. The suicide prevention hotline 1018 is staffed around the clock. For children and families, call 1056 or the European helpline 116111. Use 112 if there is immediate danger.
Safety Habits
Basic safety habits will carry you far. Stay alert in crowded transport and busy areas, keep valuables zipped and close, and plan routes home before late nights. When you need help with a non emergency incident as a visitor or parent, the tourist police at 1571 can advise in English.
Insurance
Insurance and access to care are simple when you prepare. EU students should carry a valid European Health Insurance Card for medically necessary public care during a temporary stay in Greece. Non EU students should keep their private health insurance details on hand for private providers.
Safety in the Summer
Heat and sea safety matter in the south. In midsummer, plan shade and water during the day, and avoid extended sun between midday and late afternoon. Swim only where other people are present, respect flags and lifeguard instructions, and never enter the water after alcohol. If something feels off, call 112 first.
