Profile of the Programme

The program gives the opportunity for specialization in the particular field of public administration, both at a theoretical and at a practical level. It provides postgraduate education to holders of a Bachelor in public administration, political science, law or of some other relevant field (International Relations, European Studies, Governance, etc.), and it mainly, but not exclusively, addresses itself to individuals who (intend to) work on fields relevant with the public administration and governance (public employees, public officials, employees of local government organizations and the wider public sector, diplomats, consular officials, security and military personnel, energy security personnel, general employees of companies and of other private sector entities or organizations, members of non-governmental organizations etc.).

It is expected that the program will provide its graduates with additional qualifications and enhance their cognitive and managerial capacities; this will help them enrich their career opportunities. Graduates of the program also have the opportunity to pursue further studies at a PhD level. The program particularly highlights special legal issues that are of great theoretical and practical importance, encouraging a comparative approach, within the contemporary international and regional context, intending to confront contemporary problems and challenges in a theoretically informed, while practically efficient, way. The program aims to provide postgraduate education and skills to conduct independent research on the relevant fields and achieve a deep understanding of the complexity of international affairs, as well as of the paramount importance of theoretical and methodological competence when dealing with them.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The programme is directed towards holders of a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Political Science, Law, or another relevant field (such as International Relations, European Studies, Governance, or Management), who intend to work in areas relevant to public administration and governance. In the public sector, graduates can pursue (or enhance their) careers in services under various Ministries or local authorities, as diplomats, consular officials, or military personnel, or in international organisations such as the UN, the EU, and the OECD. In the private sector, graduates can pursue careers in multinational firms, such as consultancy, management, energy security, public relations, or other related domains. Academic institutions, research centers, and non-governmental organizations across diverse domains can offer remarkable career prospects. Graduates of the program could also pursue further studies at a PhD level.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates of the programme can be accepted into Third Cycle degrees (Doctoral Degree)

The University offers English courses at different levels to assist students in meeting the required standard for admission to a graduate programme.

Course assessment usually comprises of a comprehensive final exam and continuous assessment. Continuous assessment can include amongst others, weekly interactive activities, projects, positive online forum participation etc.

Letter grades are calculated based on the weight of the final exam and the continuous assessment and the actual numerical marks obtained in these two assessment components. Based on the course grades the student’s semester grade point average (GPA) and cumulative point average (CPA) are calculated.

The Master’s in Public Administration is structured around three academic semesters.

In each semester participants are required to take 30 ECTS, completing 90 ECTS after 3 semesters of full-time tuition. 60 ECTS are completed through Core Requirements (Semester 1 and Semester 2). 30ECTS are completed through Electives (Semester 3). During Semester 3, participants have to complete either a Thesis (MIR-590DL) or three elective courses. Students who are admitted in fall (September) have the option to complete their degree in two semesters plus a summer period, assuming that they will take a Thesis that will be completed in summer (or September/October).

Graduation Requirements

The student must complete 90 ECTS and all programme requirements.
