UNIC Athens Accreditation
Further to our statement of 13 August 2026, the University of Nicosia reiterates that UNIC Athens’ Greek operating licence and the HAHE accreditations of its nine undergraduate programmes remain valid and in force. The recent Council of State decisions did not and do not concern or annul any licence or accreditation held by UNIC Athens.
We would like to further clarify that UNIC Athens is also accredited under a separate institutional and programme-level accreditation framework administered by the University of Nicosia’s home quality-assurance authority, the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA/DIPAE).
Students at UNIC Athens are, first and foremost, students of the University of Nicosia. UNIC Athens is the University of Nicosia’s branch in Greece and an integral part of the University, directly managed and academically governed by the University of Nicosia. The University of Nicosia designs and controls the programmes, sets their academic standards and awards the degrees. Graduates of UNIC Athens receive University of Nicosia degrees.
Greek NPPE law expressly reflects this structure by assigning the parent university decisive academic responsibility and responsibility for the completion of studies and the award of degrees. The Council of State has likewise recognised the parent university’s decisive academic role and continuing supervision.
In line with the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG) and the principles of the Bologna Process, UNIC Athens and its nine undergraduate programmes have been independently evaluated and accredited by CYQAA. The same programmes have been successfully accredited and delivered by the University of Nicosia in Nicosia for many years and include many successful alumni from Greece.
Cyprus, through CYQAA (which has been reviewed by ENQA and found to comply with the ESG), provides an accreditation system and legal framework for universities and their overseas branch campuses. This framework supports the delivery of University of Nicosia programmes through UNIC Athens under the continuing academic responsibility of the University and the quality-assurance oversight of CYQAA.
CYQAA accreditation is distinct from the Greek framework and provides a separate basis for programme quality and student continuity within the European Higher Education Area. In all circumstances, the University of Nicosia ensures that its students can complete their studies and receive their degrees.
We are happy to answer any questions at [email protected] and look forward to the start of the Fall 2026 semester.
