Lab Overview

The Chemistry Laboratory at UNIC Athens is a foundational experimental environment for undergraduate teaching in chemical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical sciences, and related health-science disciplines. Located in room A113 at the main building of the university, the laboratory is designed to give students disciplined exposure to the core practices of experimental chemistry: accurate measurement, controlled reaction conditions, analytical observation, safe handling of reagents, and interpretation of chemical data.

The laboratory’s mission is to build the practical chemical literacy required for students who will progress into pharmacy, life sciences, biomedical research, pharmaceutical analysis, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, and laboratory-based health professions. It provides the operational setting where theoretical principles in general chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and preparative laboratory practice are translated into experimental competence.

Its strategic teaching value lies in establishing the habits that define professional laboratory work: precision, reproducibility, risk awareness, documentation, procedural discipline, and evidence-based interpretation. Students learn not only how to perform experiments, but how to understand the relationship between method, measurement, safety, and scientific validity.

The Chemistry Laboratory is equipped to support a wide range of practical experiments, from basic chemical preparation and reaction monitoring to spectrophotometric analysis and small-scale synthetic or analytical workflows. Its configuration allows students to gain experience with both preparative and analytical approaches, creating a strong bridge between introductory chemical education and more specialised laboratories in pharmaceutical analysis, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, biochemistry, and molecular biology.

Research & Innovation Focus

The laboratory enables teaching innovation in experimental chemistry, analytical measurement, small-scale preparation, chemical handling, and scientific reasoning. It supports practical education in solution preparation, concentration calculations, reaction conditions, spectrophotometric measurement, chemical observation, and interpretation of experimental outcomes.

For students in health and pharmaceutical sciences, the laboratory provides the chemical foundation needed to understand drug properties, molecular behaviour, assay principles, solubility, concentration, reaction kinetics, purity, and analytical readouts. This is essential for later engagement with medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, formulation science, toxicology, quality control, and biomedical laboratory methods.

The laboratory also supports supervised student work where foundational chemical techniques are required as part of broader final-year or interdisciplinary projects. Its value is strongest where chemical preparation, controlled heating, reagent handling, basic analytical measurement, and safe bench practice are required before students progress into higher-complexity research environments.

Core Capabilities

The Chemistry Laboratory enables:

  • Undergraduate practical training in general, organic, analytical, and preparative chemistry.
  • Accurate weighing, reagent handling, solution preparation, dilution, and standard laboratory calculations.
  • UV-Visible spectrophotometric analysis for quantitative and qualitative chemical measurements.
  • Controlled heating, stirring, and reaction support using hot plates, magnetic stirrers, and heating mantles.
  • Safe execution of chemical procedures through portable fume hoods and structured laboratory supervision.
  • Small-scale preparative workflows using standard glassware, plasticware, and support equipment.
  • Development of student competence in measurement accuracy, chemical observation, experimental documentation, and data interpretation.
  • Foundational preparation for advanced work in pharmaceutical analysis, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and pharmacology.

The Chemistry Laboratory functions as a core teaching infrastructure for scientific formation. It gives students the experimental discipline required to engage responsibly with more advanced biomedical, pharmaceutical, and research settings.
