Visit of the Commissioner for the Environment to the University of Nicosia
On Tuesday, 11 November 2025, the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Ms Antonia Theodosiou, together with the Senior Veterinary Officer of her Office, Ms Elena Georgiou, visited the University of Nicosia.
The delegation was welcomed by Professor Zoi Polizopoulou, Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr Daphne Mavrides, Clinical Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Veterinary Medicine, and Mr George Sykalides, Director of Communications for UNIC Health.
During the meeting, discussions focused on potential areas of collaboration between the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Office of the Commissioner, as well as the school’s contribution to public discourse and policymaking on animal protection and welfare. Topics addressed during the meeting included:
- recording the numbers of stray dogs and cats
- campaigns to provide free microchips for dogs
- reproductive control for stray animals (and hunting dogs),
- organising awareness days and seminars on these issues,
development of courses for certified training in companion animal management
emergency care for animals.
Following the meeting, the delegation was given a tour of the School’s Anatomy Laboratory, where the state-of-the-art facilities and hands-on learning opportunities available to students were presented.
