University of Nicosia and Cyprus Association of Civil Engineers (CyACE) sign memorandum of understanding

Strengthening links between the Department of Engineering and Cyprus’ Civil Engineering community

Following a recent meeting between faculty members of the University of Nicosia’s Department of Engineering and a delegation from the Cyprus Association of Civil Engineers (CyACE), the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement seeks to deepen cooperation between academia and practicing civil engineers in Cyprus on multiple fronts.

During the meeting, participants exchanged views on key issues affecting the profession in Cyprus, including support for young engineers; the need to enhance training in emerging technologies; broader inclusion of health and safety topics in university curricula; and closer links between universities and the labour market. The discussion also highlighted a pressing concern: despite rising demand for civil engineers in Cyprus, the number of graduates in the discipline has fallen noticeably.

Under the MoU, the parties agreed, among other initiatives, to the following: (a) co-organize public events and outreach activities that showcase the important role of Civil and Environmental Engineers in societal development and well-being; (b) admit civil engineering students to the Association as student members, giving them access to mentoring, events, and other activities; (c) promote academic excellence by offering awards and recognition to outstanding students.

The meeting took place at the premises of the University of Nicosia in an exceptionally positive and constructive atmosphere, laying the groundwork for even closer collaboration between the University of Nicosia and the Cyprus Association of Civil Engineers in the years ahead. The MoU was signed by Dr Stelios Neophytou, Head of the Department of Engineering at the University of Nicosia, and by Mr Kyriakos Tsioupanis, President of the Board of CyACE.
