UNIC Medical School involved in Harvard-Cyprus Environmental Health projects
Souzana Achilleos, Assistant Professor and MPH Programme Coordinator at UNIC Medical School, participated in the 4th Scientific Symposium on Emerging Climatic and Environmental Health Risks, held on 19–20 January 2026 at the Hellenic Mediterranean University and co hosted with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH).
The symposium featured four keynote speakers and thirteen Harvard master’s students, who presented methodologies, emerging data, and trends in environmental health research across diverse geographical and socio-environmental settings.
The students’ presentations formed part of the Cyprus-Harvard Internship Programme in Environmental Health, organised in collaboration with the Harvard Cyprus Endowment Fund for Environmental and Public Health. The programme provides first year HSPH MSc candidates in Environmental Health with training and experience in research on global public health challenges, particularly those relevant to Cyprus and the wider region.
Dr Souzana Achilleos serves as the primary supervisor for two of the internship projects:
- ‘The combined effect of temperature and air pollution, including dust storms, on hospital admissions due to respiratory causes in Greece and Cyprus’
- ‘Combined effect of heat and particulate pollution on birthweight in Cyprus’
Her involvement further strengthens the collaboration between UNIC and Harvard in the field of environmental and public health research.
