The Procedural Law Unit participated at the 20th Anniversary Conference of the Journal of Private International Law held at UCL
The Director of the Procedural Law Unit at the University of Nicosia, Dr. Nicolas Kyriakides, together with external associate Yiolanti Maou, and research associate Luis Hewitt, co-authored and presented a paper at the 20th Anniversary Conference of the Journal of Private International Law. Organised by the Journal, widely regarded as the leading English-language law review in the field, the three-day biennial international conference brought together over 150 speakers, including prominent academics and professors from around the world. The event opened with an inspiring keynote by Lord Collins of Mapesbury, who traced the evolution of private international law from the early days of his career to the present.
Dr. Kyriakides and Ms. Maou, both NYU School of Law LL.M. alumni, had the pleasure of reconnecting with Professor Linda Silberman, whose teaching in conflict of laws laid the foundation for their careers in private international law. Dr. Kyriakides and Yiolanti Maou presented their paper, “Does it still fit? Assessing the suitability of the EU’s Private International Law Framework in the wake of AI-related cross-border disputes”, exploring the challenges and opportunities posed by AI-driven non-contractual disputes under the current EU private international law regime.
The presentation was part of a vibrant panel on technology, AI, and private international law, chaired by María Mercedes Albornoz, and featuring contributions from Rishi Gulati, Marion Ho-Dac, and Liwen Zhang. The panel facilitated a lively discussion on the intersection of emerging technologies and cross-border legal frameworks, highlighting innovative approaches to long-standing challenges in the field.
We extend our gratitude to the UCL Faculty of Laws for hosting the conference, and to Professors Uglješa Grusić and Alex Mills for their thoughtful organization and warm welcome. Our thanks also go to Professors Paul Beaumont and Jonathan Harris, General Editors of the Journal of Private International Law, whose vision and dedication continue to advance the discipline. It was an honour for our PLU team to contribute to this milestone event and to share in such a rich exchange of ideas.
