Procedural Law Unit Participates in Parliamentary Discussion on Tackling Court Delays Following the Rule of Law Report
The Director of the Procedural Law Unit at the University of Nicosia, Dr. Nicolas Kyriakides, participated on Wednesday, 17 September 2025, in a session of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, Justice and Public Order of the House of Representatives, on the issue of delays in the administration of justice.
In his statement, he emphasised that there are already documented proposals to accelerate proceedings, such as the establishment of an Independent Court Service, the separation of small claims and the use of technology to expedite trials. However, he stressed that what is needed is the adoption of specific timetables, as was the case when the reform was promoted by the European Commission and the Council of Europe. Otherwise, he warned, the same problems will continue to recur year after year without any real improvement, further undermining the credibility of the judicial system in society.
