Eric Topol at the 2nd UNIC Athens Evolve Lecture Series: “The Great Shift in Medicine Is Prevention”
The second lecture of the University of Nicosia’s Evolve Lecture Series took place at UNIC Athens on Thursday, 25 June 2026, featuring Eric Topol, one of the world’s leading authorities in cardiology, biomedical research and digital health. His public lecture, titled “Extending our Healthspan: Preventing the Major Age-Related Diseases,” explored the emerging opportunities of preventive medicine in addressing the major diseases associated with ageing.
The event was opened by the Chief Executive Officer of the University of Nicosia, Antonis Polemitis, who underlined that Eric Topol’s work and thinking have, for many years, anticipated the direction in which medicine is moving today: the combination of much more detailed human data with artificial intelligence, with the aim of enabling more personalised approaches to health and prevention.
From Lifespan to Healthspan
In his lecture, Eric Topol focused on the distinction between lifespan and healthspan, namely the years during which people live in good health and maintain functional capacity. As he underlined, the objective of modern medicine is not only to extend life, but also to prevent, at an early stage, the major diseases associated with ageing, primarily cardiovascular disease, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
New Tools for Prediction and Prevention
A central theme of the lecture was the transition from treating disease to predicting and preventing it. Topol highlighted the role of the immune system in biological ageing and presented developments in biological clocks, blood biomarkers, proteomics and the use of artificial intelligence for more accurate risk assessment. He also made particular reference to the ability of these tools to predict not only whether, but also when, an individual is likely to develop a specific disease.
At the same time, he referred to interventions that are already available today, such as physical exercise, quality sleep, an anti-inflammatory diet and reducing exposure to environmental risk factors. He further stressed that the new possibilities offered by preventive medicine must be low-cost and accessible so that they can contribute to reducing health inequalities.
A Discussion on the Future of Medicine
The lecture concluded with a discussion with the audience on the accuracy of AI-based predictive models, the limits of current knowledge on longevity, and the challenges of implementing these advances in healthcare systems. Eric Topol’s presence at UNIC Athens reaffirmed the objective of the Evolve Lecture Series to bring leading figures from the international scientific community to Athens and to strengthen public dialogue on the future of health, medicine and biomedical research.
