Contemporary Practices and Issues of Public Governance in European States and Societies under the microscope at UNIC

The University of Nicosia Public Administration (MPA, 3 Semesters) – E-Learning/Distance Learning (Online) programme organised a webinar on Wednesday, 23 July 2025, titled “States and Societies in Europe: Contemporary Practices and Issues of Public Governance”.

This webinar addressed the increasingly complex relationship between state institutions and society amidst current socio-political disruptions such as democratic backsliding, welfare pressures, political disaffection, and European integration challenges. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach that drew on sociology, political science, and public administration, the event offered a critical examination of how public governance practices in Europe are adapting—or failing to adapt—to these evolving conditions.

The webinar featured presentations by distinguished academics including Dr Giorgos Charalambous, Associate Professor at the UNIC School of Law and coordinator of the Master in Public Administration – E-Learning/Distance Learning (Online) programme, who also coordinated the session, and Dr Christina Ioannou, Associate Dean of the School of Law and Associate Professor.

The presentations were followed by a discussion, offering participants the opportunity to exchange perspectives on the resilience of democratic institutions and the future of European social policy.
