The University of Nicosia announces the opening of ten (10) positions for admission to the to the Doctorate (PhD) in Computer Science for the Fall 2026 semester of the academic year 2026-2027.

Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to review the research interests of the Department’s faculty members and to communicate with potential supervisors prior to submitting their application. In collaboration with a prospective supervisor, candidates are expected to identify a well-defined research topic aligned with the faculty member’s expertise and interests and to receive appropriate academic guidance for the preparation of their research proposal.

About the Programme:

The doctorate degree is intended for applicants who have excelled during their undergraduate and/or graduate studies, have a strong motivation and enthusiasm towards technological research and innovation, and are inclined to work in the academic domain or a research-intensive environment in the industry.

Specific aims of the programme:

  • Advance students in depth understanding and critical analysis of current theoretical state-of-the-art literature and research methodology in the field of Computer Science (respective PhD field).
  • Enhance students’ research skills and facilitate the development of expertise relevant to their research specialization area.
  • Advance students’ understanding and application of suitable research methodologies and scientific methods providing them with skills to carry out their doctoral research project.
  • Educate students in how to disseminate research findings, conclusions and suggestions, for example through publishing in academic journals and/or presenting their work in academic conferences and seminars.
  • Give students a broad understanding of research approaches and methods, which will enable them to read and comprehend a wide range of academic research papers to enhance their research competence and facilitate the development of future research activities.
  • Develop the skills to write up and submit a research proposal to a funding agency and/or assist a faculty member with a grant proposal, prior to graduation.

Ph.D. holders in Computer Science:  

  • Have deep understanding of the field and exhibit advanced skills and methods of research associated with the field.
  • Are able to conceive, design, implement and adapt a substantial process of research.
  • Have made a contribution through original research that extends the frontier of knowledge by developing a substantial body of work, some of which merits national or international refereed publication.
  • Are capable of critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas.
  • Are able to promote, within academic and professional contexts, technological, social or cultural advancement in a knowledge-based society.
  • Are able to work in Universities, Institutes of Higher Education and Research centers and organizations.

Admission Requirements and Procedures

Eligible candidates should hold a recognised Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related field in Pure Sciences (e.g., Mathematics, Physics). Applicants with a computer science related Master’s Degree (*) and a strong Computer Science Bachelor’s Degree will also be considered.

Students are admitted both in the Fall and Spring semesters.

Two reference letters

Research Proposal: Research proposal with title- an initial proposal (4,000 – 6,000 words) outlining the research topic, aims and objectives, research questions and proposed research methodology, substantiated by literature (not longer than 6K words).

Publications: Previous theses/dissertations and any published work of academic relevance (research work and published articles-if any).

Statement of Purpose: Applicants are required to submit a comprehensive research outline highlighting their academic and individual competencies and state why they believe they are suitable for admission to the programme, as well as their reflections regarding the expectations and value of the programme for their personal advancement and career development.

Personal Interview: in person or through teleconferencing

English Language Proficiency: TOEFL (paper-based test 550, computer-based test 213) or IELTS 6.5. For students who graduated from an English-speaking University, English language is not a requirement.
