Career and Employability Prospects

Pharmacists in the European Union benefit from the automatic recognition of their qualifications, as set out in Directive 2013/55/EU, which enhances their professional mobility and allows them to work across all member states without additional barriers. This framework facilitates knowledge exchange and the harmonization of educational programs, affording those who choose this profession numerous career opportunities.

Growing emphasis on pharmaceutical products and primary healthcare, together with the need for personalized and innovative treatments, has opened new career paths in healthcare. Pharmacists play an important part in research and development, helping advance therapeutic practices as well as the management of pharmaceutical care and the provision of expert advice to both patients and other healthcare professionals.

Despite these advantages, the PGEU underlines that there are major workforce shortages in certain parts of Europe. Pharmacists can work in diverse professional environments. Typically, community pharmacies represent the main area of activity, but additional opportunities exist at the hospital and clinical levels. The pharmaceutical industry also provides dynamic openings for research, development, and the manufacturing of new pharmaceutical products. At the same time, academia and research remain appealing employment choices.

Moreover, with support from national and European authorities, pharmacists can join regulatory agencies or undertake consulting projects, shaping policies and ensuring the safety, quality, and effectiveness of pharmaceutical products.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates of the programme can be accepted into Third Cycle degrees (Doctoral Degree)

Academic Admission

The programme admits students in the Fall semester. Applications for admission to the programme will be considered only from candidates that fulfil the minimum entrance criteria as described below.

Applicants eligible for admission to undergraduate programmes under the Greek legal framework, which establishes minimum admission criteria, include:

a) Greek or foreign nationals holding a General High School Diploma (ΓΕ.Λ.) or a Vocational High School Diploma (ΕΠΑ.Λ.) with an average grade in the four (4) nationwide examination subjects equal to or greater than the minimum admission threshold. This threshold is determined by multiplying the lowest average grade among all examinees within a given scientific field by a coefficient of 0.8 in the year of participation.

b) Holders of equivalent secondary education diplomas from recognized foreign schools in Greece (level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework).

c) Holders of international secondary education diplomas issued by schools in Greece or abroad, foreign nationals with an equivalent high school diploma, or an equivalent vocational education qualification granting them the right to access higher education institutions in the country where they studied.

d) For graduates mentioned in point (a) before the academic year 2021-2022, as well as holders of a first-cycle degree, the terms and conditions for selection and admission are set by the parent institution (University of Nicosia).

Specifically, the minimum requirements for admission to the Programme are as follows:

– 17/20 in High School Leaving Certificate and 17/20 in Chemistry and Biology (concentration) or equivalent grades in IB

Or

– High School Leaving Certificate with a minimum of 17/20 in General Studies and GCE A-Level (or IAL) in Chemistry and Biology with a grade B or equivalent grades in IB

Or

– Successful (at least 75%) in the entrance examinations (Chemistry and Biology) organized by the University of Nicosia for candidates with at least 16/20 in the Lyceum (ApoL) The admissions process includes an interview with the candidate. An assessment form is used during the interview.

Proficiency in Greek Language

A prerequisite for the enrollment of students in programmes of study offered in the Greek language is a good knowledge of Greek. This can be demonstrated by a B2 level certificate from the Center for the Teaching of Greek as a Foreign Language, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, B2 Proficiency Certificate from the School of Modern Greek Language, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, or B2 Level Certificate from the Center for the Greek Language (Ministry of Education, Greece).

This certificate is not required if:

1) if the student holds a secondary education diploma from a Greek or Cypriot school,
2) or if the student holds a secondary education diploma from a foreign school from which it is evident that the student has successfully studied and been examined in the Greek language.

Course assessment usually comprises of a comprehensive final exam and continuous assessment. Continuous assessment can include amongst others, mid-terms, projects and class participation.

Letter grades are calculated based on the weight of the final exam and the continuous assessment and the actual numerical marks obtained in these two assessment components. Based on the course grades the student’s semester grade point average (GPA) and cumulative point average (CPA) are calculated.

The student must complete 300 ECTS and all programme requirements.

A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 2.0 is required. Thus, although a ‘D-‘ is a PASS grade, in order to achieve a CPA of 2.0 an average grade of ‘C’ is required.

Upon completion of the programme students will be able to:

  1. Understand comprehensive and current knowledge in the field of pharmacy through academic and practical experiences, enabling critical evaluation of relevant literature and adaptation to scientific and technological developments, including emerging technologies.
  2. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of pharmaceutical technology, pharmacognosy, pharmacology, toxicology, medicinal chemistry, physics, and calculations relevant to pharmaceutical sciences, therapeutics, clinical pharmacy practice, and pharmacokinetics.
  3. Understand and analyse the key stages in drug discovery, development, and authorisation, incorporating regulatory requirements across different jurisdictions.
  4. Explain drug actions and solve therapeutic problems as a medication expert
  5. Design preventive, interventions, and educational strategies to manage chronic diseases, promote public health and provide personalized support to patients for effective medication management and improved therapeutic outcomes
  6. Develop and conduct research within pharmaceutical science and clinical practice, focusing on basic science research and applied research, alongside analysing, interpreting data, and evaluating therapeutic interventions.
  7. Evaluate the safety and efficacy of therapeutic interventions, providing person-centered care as a medication expert.
  8. Engage as active healthcare team members, develop collaborative practice and communication skills, with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive patient care and exchanging knowledge and experiences to solve complex health problems.

  10. Apply standards, guidelines, and best practices for the safe and effective preparation, control, and use of medications in both community and hospital pharmacy settings.
  11. Demonstrate a commitment to the pharmacy profession through continual improvement and adherence to legal and ethical practices.
  12. Understand the healthcare systems, policies, and socio-economic factors affecting access to healthcare.
  13. Integrate technology, including AI tools, in pharmacy with a clear understanding of ethical, legal, and professional implications.
