Graduate Andreas Prokopiou takes the top spot at this year’s European Architectural Medals

The ARC Department of Architecture, University of Nicosia, achieved international recognition yet again, with recent Architecture graduate, Andreas Prokopiou. Andreas was awarded first prize at this year’s “European Architectural Medals” competition, for his degree dissertation centered on the subject: «Negotiating the edge».

Andrea’s work explores the relationship between two proposed edges, that of the buffer zone that divides the city of Nicosia into two parts, and the urban environment. His work aims at proposing a new system – a grid that does not destruct or obstruct, but rather superimposes above the low buildings a loose frame that restitches and unites – and that can respond to the city’s needs in every possible scenario. The proposed system can be adjusted effectively regardless of the relationship between the two communities.

The European Architectural Medals for the Best Diploma Projects (EAM BDP) is an annual European competition that awards the top degree dissertations, and recognizes a student’s successful transition from the academic arena to the corporate world. Student works are first evaluated by individual schools or departments, after which the two best projects from each school/department are submitted for assessment to an international jury. In total, 78 European Schools or Departments of Architecture participated in the 2017 competition.

ARC graduate, Anthimos Papapericleous, was also recognised at the European Architectural Medals, with his work titled “Proeter Viovem / Beyond Sight” being shortlisted in the top 30 best diploma projects out of 156 entries.
