Mobile Clinic travels to Lythrodontas to deliver specialised eye examinations

Last Saturday, the Mobile Clinic travelled to the village of Lythrodontas in the Nicosia district on a special mission to provide specialised eye examinations in collaboration with ophthalmologists from Pantheo Eye Center.

The visit, made possible through the Medical School’s long-standing collaboration with the Centre, took place at the community’s Olive and Flour Mill Museum, which was temporarily adapted and equipped with specialised medical equipment to host the clinical activities.

The ophthalmology team. comprising Dr Theodoros Potamitis, Dr Katia Papastavrou, Dr Aristos Kafkalias, Dr Theodora Georgouli, and ophthalmologists in training, Dr Paschalia Michelongona and Dr Ioanna Stavrou, was joined by 17 students, who assisted in providing care to local residents. The student team included five medical students from Örebro University in Sweden, who are participating in an Erasmus exchange programme with UNIC.

Prior to travelling to Lythrodontas, the students received training at the facilities of Pantheo Eye Center, where the doctors prepared them to participate in the ophthalmic examination process.

Approximately 25 residents received eye check-ups during the visit, giving students the opportunity to observe a range of cases, including cataracts.

The community of Lythrodontas ensured that the doctors and students had refreshments throughout the visit and later hosted the team for lunch at a picturesque tavern just outside the village. This offered community members, students, doctors, and Medical School staff an opportunity to connect and reflect on the experience.

‘It was a pleasure to work alongside the highly skilled and dedicated staff from Pantheo Eye Center, whose guidance and expertise made the day both educational and impactful. Their willingness to teach and support us throughout the screenings provided invaluable learning opportunities and further strengthened my appreciation for community-based healthcare initiatives’.

‘Volunteering at the ophthalmology mobile clinic in Lythrodontas was a rewarding experience, as I assisted in providing free eye check-ups and patient assessments within the community. It gave me valuable hands-on exposure while reinforcing the importance of preventative and accessible healthcare’.
