Guest lecture at UNIC Athens highlights journey of blood from donor to patient

Marianna Politou, Professor of Haematology–Transfusion Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Head of the Haematology Laboratory-Blood Bank at Aretaieio Hospital, delivered an engaging lecture on Tuesday, 17 March 2026 at UNIC Athens.

Her presentation focused on the Blood Transfusion Chain, detailing the complex journey blood makes from donor to patient. She described each stage of the process – collection, testing, processing, storage, distribution, and administration – highlighting the processes that guarantee safe and effective transfusions.

Prof. Politou also discussed blood donor eligibility criteria and the importance of proper blood analysis and storage to ensure safety and quality throughout the transfusion process. In addition, she spoke about the upcoming voluntary blood drive at UNIC Athens, where medical students will participate as ambassadors and facilitators.

The lecture captured the students’ interest and helped raise awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation. The session concluded with questions and an interactive discussion.
