Pi (π)-day is celebrated every year on 14 March by Math enthusiasts worldwide
The UNIC Mathematics Programme is organising a lecture titled “Euler’s Identity: The most beautiful equation” by Prof. Nectarios Papanicolaou (Professor of Applied Mathematics, and Mathematics Programme Coordinator), in honour of Pi day which is considered equivalent to World Mathematics Day.
Euler’s Identity was voted in various polls as “The most beautiful equation in Mathematics”. It connects five fundamental mathematical constants each of which has its own rich history and applications. One of these is the celebrated number Pi (π), the ratio of a circle’s circumference over its diameter. Another is Euler’s number e, which appears in a multitude of applications ranging from compound interest to electronic devices.
The presentation will focus on the historical developments related to π and e and of course a short biography of Leonhard Euler, the great Swiss mathematician responsible for the famous equation that bears his name.
Regardless of an individual’s background, anyone can join the event as most of the lecture which will be delivered in English, is non-technical.
