Dr. Nicolas Kyriakides at the Hellenic Association of Procedural Law
On 31 March 2026, the Director of the University of Nicosia Procedural Law Unit, Dr. Nicolas Kyriakides, was invited by the Hellenic Association of Procedural Law to speak at the Athens Bar Association Hall.
Dr. Kyriakides presented his paper entitled “Public Perception of Rapid Preliminary Adjudication in Small Claims – A Comparative Legal Approach”, engaging in discussions on the use of AI-assisted expedited procedures in civil justice and their implications for fairness, efficiency and trust in judicial systems, while examining how members of the public perceive emerging forms of digitally supported adjudication.
Adopting a comparative perspective, the presentation explored findings from England and Wales, Germany and Cyprus, highlighting both key differences and shared challenges in relation to access to justice, procedural transparency and trust in automated or semi-automated decision-making. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of technological innovation in reshaping small claims procedures and the need to balance efficiency gains with fundamental procedural safeguards.
The event brought together academics and practitioners in the field of procedural law to exchange insights on contemporary developments in civil justice and the digitalisation of judicial processes. Discussions focused on the opportunities and challenges presented by technological advancements, as well as their broader impact on public confidence in the justice system.
