Charalampos Skarlis, Pharm.D, MSc, PhD

Charalampos Skarlis is an Assistant Professor in Pharmacology at the University of Nicosia Medical School, Athens

Dr. Skarlis earned his Pharmacy degree with distinction from the University of Ferrara, Italy, in 2013. He also holds two MSc (hons) titles from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), one in Molecular & Applied Physiology (2020) and one in Clinical Trials Design & Execution (2022) both . In 2023, he obtained his PhD with honors from the Medical School of NKUA, focusing on immunogenetics, immunotherapy, clinical sleep studies, and stress parameters in pediatric Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Currently, he is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Medical School of NKUA, investigating the role of BAFF haplotypes in Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy risk in MS patients.

Throughout the last decade, his research interests have been focused on the pathophysiology, immunogenetics, and immunotherapeutics of systemic and organ-specific autoimmune diseases, including  Sjögren’s syndrome (SjD), inflammatory myositis, and adult (AOMS) and pediatric-onset (POMS) MS. Specifically, Dr. Skarlis explored the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the development of autoimmune diseases including SjD, SLE, MS, and Myositis, focusing on the IGF-1/IGF-1R axis’s, Type I interferons, RANKL/OPG, and LpPLA2. As well as the role of  HLA-Class II, ApoE, and BAFF axis in the pathophysiology and treatment of AOMS and POMS patients. Additionally, Dr. Skarlis has extensive experience in clinical trials, of under-development therapeutic agents for MS, SjD, and Scleroderma treatment.
