
Dr Dimitrios Karatzas
Clinical Associate Professor
Dr. Dimitrios Karatzas is a cardiologist and clinical academic based in Athens, Greece. He completed his Medical Degree at the University of Athens Medical School in 1993 and obtained his PhD from the same institution in 2009, with a thesis entitled “The Immunomodulatory Effect of Physical Training in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure.” He is board certified in cardiology and holds extensive experience in clinical cardiology, echocardiography, and the management of heart failure and coronary syndromes.
Dr. Karatzas trained at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Centre and has since served in several leading hospitals, including Attikon University Hospital and Henry Dunant Hospital Center. He is currently Associate Director of the 6th Department of Cardiology at HYGEIA Hospital and Clinical Associate Professor at UNIC.
His research focuses on heart failure, acute coronary syndromes, and heart valve disease. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has contributed to national cardiology textbooks. Dr. Karatzas has participated in multiple international multicenter clinical trials and has received awards from the Hellenic Cardiological Society, the Hellenic Heart Failure Association, and the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center.
In addition to his clinical and research activities, he has been actively involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Athens Medical School. He has served as President of the Heart Failure Working Group of the Hellenic Cardiological Society (2018–2020) and currently serves as Associate Editor of Developments and Perspectives in Cardiology and Assistant Editor of the Hellenic Journal of Cardiology.
