At the event the following lectures will take place:

 

Mr. George Katodrytis, RIBA         

Title: “Emergent Material and Performative Urbanism:  A Search for a New and Dynamic Architecture of the Middle East”

George Katodrytis is an architect involved in practice, teaching and research. He is currently Associate Professor of Architecture at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. He studied and taught at the Architectural Association in London and he has been a visiting professor at various schools around the world. He worked in Paris, London, Nicosia and Dubai. He built a number of projects in Europe and the Middle East as well as published widely on contemporary architecture, urbanism, cultural theory and digital media. The work addresses the 'city', especially as it is evolving in the 21st century. He employs digital technology and scripting as tools for establishing new formal and performative language and fabrication in architecture.

 

Mr. Michael Hughes , Associate Professor         

Title: "Constructing Curriculum”

Michael Hughes is an Associate Professor and Department Head in Architecture at the American University of Sharjah.  He attended the University of Virginia, for his BS in Architecture and Princeton University for his Masters in Architecture. Professor Hughes began his teaching at Cornell University in 1995 after working professionally in the Los Angeles offices of Richard Meier and Frank Gehry.  He is also co-principal of Catovic Hughes Design.

Professor Hughes' research, teaching and creative activities involve a combination of design, community outreach, tectonics and material exploration.  These interests inform a pedagogical agenda focused on an integrated approach to architectural education that emphasize hands-on learning, sustainable practices, and civic responsibility. His built work has been recognized with eight A.I.A. Design Awards and five awards from the American Collegiate Schools of Architecture.  In addition, Prof. Hughes' work has been published in professional journals such as Architectural Record, Progressive Architecture, Dwell Magazine, and the Journal of Architectural Education.

 

The lectures will take place at the Amphitheater of the Architecture Research Center, University of Nicosia.
